the future of the Yacht Master

I'm relatively new to Rolex and know the basics such as brand and models. But that's where my knowledge ends.

I picked the worst time to buy a Rolex but will still try to get one at retail if I can. If I can't - so be it.

I'm now aware my first choice, the Submariner no-date is hard to come by - at least in Australia. So I've delved into other models and noticed the Yacht Master is relatively close to retail second hand.

Example;
https://www.rolex.com/watches/yacht-...6622-0002.html
AU$16,900

https://www.chrono24.com.au/rolex/ya...id19115668.htm
AU$17,619 (advertised)

Does this mean the Yacht Master series is easier to get brand new?

Is it a 'hidden' gem and that may go bonkers-money like a Sub down the track?

You can still pick up brand new steel yacht master from AD when you walk in. The blue dial is a little bit harder but the silver dial is definitely able to get from showcase. The bezel insert is platinum so it is not as scratch resistant as ceramic(also not sure they can polish the platinum bezel insert during service). Also because it is not that hard to get in the market, so the price is not super crazy right now in the secondary market. But I think the yacht master is beautiful and elegant. It gives you the feel of the luxury sports watch rather than the feel of a expensive tool watch. I think it is really a good watch to buy if you love it. Also is a good piece to start your relationship with the AD

the ss models are hard to come by at AD's right now. I have a tt yachtmaster and its kinda 'dressier' than subs....i dont see them becoming iconic or as highly sought after as some of the subs (hulk, 1680's ) but get what you like. I knew i was going to get a hulk when i first saw it and i did. I also like the Yachtmaster 2 ss for the same reasons 'just because i really like it' ....and i dont do regatta's then again i have an omega moonwatch and im not going there either, I can see the possibility of a YM2 being discontinued and then 'katy bar the doors'... but i think get what you like.....

It is still possible to get from the AD right now. It is really good piece to buy if you really like it, but don’t expect the prices fly out of the roof

Yes, in my personal experience the YM40 is easier to obtain from AD.
I was able to get the YM40 Rhodium Dial from AD last year with no wait, and no purchase history with them.

Good luck!

That's a beautiful watch and great example of some amazing finds once you go past the hype.

The YM blue dial is a beautiful watch, and would be a fine choice.
It is not as difficult to source from an AD as most SS sports models, however it could still take a while.
Suggest you try for a new one first and go grey if the wait is too long.
I see in the example you have given on Chrono, that the watch has been incorrectly shown as a 126622.
It is a 2015 piece, with the model being 116622.
There is certainly nothing wrong with an older model, but keep that in mind when considering the price differential.
Also remember that a 2015 watch will have no Rolex warranty.
Good luck with your search.

Interested to see where Rolex takes the YM long term...seems like a more eclectic Submariner. Maybe a dial and accent color change is in order down the road? The slate dial with blue second hand is a top 3 Rolex watch IMO.

I wouldn't use the term 'easier' with any steel Rolex model nowadays, but I do think your odds are better. Let's put it that way.

It's not 'hidden.' It's been around forever, almost 30 years, in fact. In that time it has enjoyed a certain niche membership, with factors like the expense (higher MSRP than the Sub), more bling, and the ever-ending obsession from potential buyers that something might scratch their precious bezel factoring into that exclusivity.

So, given all that, yes, you have a better chance of getting one from an AD. But, as far as buying something that will go 'bonkers-money' down the track...that answer is much less clear.

Let me add one caveat, though. All this talk of speculating can kill the joy of a truly wonderful hobby. I speak from experience. As you're new to the game, my advice is to shut out all the white noise about what something costs vs. what it will be worth down the road and try to find the watch that really fuels your passion. Just my two cents.

its an awesome complication....yes, its more available then some other models and thats a big plus because you can purchase one if you want...just like the old days and the way things used to be....As far as what these watches will do in the future nobody knows and that should not matter if you really love the piece you are buying.....Will you love a watch more because it's worth more? To me its not about the monetary worth but rather the sentimental worth.....

In USA i think it's no trouble, just need a little luck and persistence as a first buy.

Australia, I've heard horror stories... You may want to save yourself the trouble and go straight to grey after a month or two, I don't think the grey prices are crazy.

I love my rhodium YM, but the platinum dial always brings on a twinge of remorse.
