Absolutely nothing against the SD43 or Deepsea, but in terms what I value most in a watch the Submariner is what I prefer and still own. |

Rolex do make the dweller for a reason. It is a tougher watch, its not just about depth.I was issued with a military sub,so i do know what i am talking about, unlike many on here. But like many have said, the Sub gets the job done. Lets face it,many brands make great back up dive watches today, and Rolex subs are no where near to being the most popular or the best. How many divers do you think use a watch in the subs price class,as a back up dive watch today? |

I personally find the SD bezel a little to ‘busy’ for me with all the minute markers on it. Personal preference. Have been offered the SD on a number of occasions and IMO doesn’t supersede the Sub in any shape or form so have always declined. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The SD only begins to beat the Sub at 1,000 feet, otherwise nope.
If by 'rate' you mean depth rating, then yep. Otherwise, nope. |

Yes. It's the quintessential Rolex.
It is to Rolex what E-class is for Mercedes. Not the most expensive top model, not even close... but the most reliable and most important.

I must have mis-read the original post…
I read “king” of divers… not the most iconic or best value or whatever… King, to me in this case, is the most technical diver watch that can reach the depth others cannot. So without a doubt, it would be Omega ultra deep pro. If it has to be Rolex, it would be the seadweller deepsea. Sub is a wonderful and iconic watch.. but it’s only king of being the most popular diver imo. Btw, I own a sub so not hatin. Lol

Oh no, you mentioned Omega which I could make some very good arguments from their dive line. “King” to many is the most popular but one could also argue if McDonalds makes the best hamburger of all times because they sold more of those as well. |

Is this a trick question?
My grand daughter said “It’s a lion”.

Sub is perhaps the most popular diver, but that means it is not a king. A king can't be such common. The king of Rolex divers is not doubt the DSSD.

Some of you are over thinking and taking it too literally.
Everyone knows that some dive watches can dive deeper, some dive watches are more affordable for divers, etc. Sub is the overall king in the diver class of watches. Period. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I like older Submariners but the new ones look shiny, bulky and unfinished (just my opinion) For a time I had the 300m Omega Bond Style with sword hands and printed black dial that came before the co-ax movement was introduced. It was a fine watch but not so nice or comfortable as my 5513 but it looked better than any of the new overweight Submariners/Seadwellers. If I were shopping now I'd probably go for the Tudor, not just because its better value but has a more sensible design and feel.

It’s like this, if I had any other dive watch other than a sub, technically better or not, more expensive or less, etc, I would always look at it and think, man it’s not a sub. There are more that think like me than not, thus the sub popularity. I don’t know what if anything can change this. Perception and brand strength is strong with this one.

“King” may not be the best word to describe it, but let’s just say it is an iconic reference. There’s no doubt it holds a special place of significance in the world of wrist watch history.
