Can Rolexes really live up to what build them up to be??

I may be a special case (although I highly doubt it) but I've been obsessed with these watches for years. I remember sitting in computer class in high school, looking at pictures of rolexes online instead of doing the projects assigned

I've had my heart set on a specific model for months at a time, only to fall in love all over again (almost feeling guilty about it) with another model after a trip to an AD when "just looking".

When we build these watches up as much as we do, devoting the time / energy / money to acquire them, when the chase is all said and done and the watch is on your wrist -

I'm wondering if anyone ever feels disappointed becuase the watch was placed on such a pedestal that it could have never possibly lived up to what we envisioned it as!

Any takers?

I myself can't see this hapening when i finally pull the trigger, but the chase is still on for me and the pedestal is higher then ever as I get closer to owning my first piece!!

We shall see!!!

Mine has lived up to everything that I expected from it and more. I found that no matter how much I built it up, that there is no better feeling than slipping it on your wrist and seeing it there. And even to this point, 5 years later, I will stare at it and say, yep, worth every penny.

It's important to see the watch and try it on if possible. Most pictures on the web are terrible. It is very difficult to get a good idea of what it is going to look like on your wrist.

These watches catch the light in so many different ways that no single photo can ever show that and most photos are too dark or too light or out of focus or the white balance is so far off that the yellow gold is a deep pink.

You have to see these watches in person. Put it on and take it out in the light and watch it smile at you.

I'm that way with my watches I currently own, constantly looking at my wrist and truly enjoying them!
I can only assume that my girlfriend of six years will have to fight for attention once I finally own a Rolex :)

I have tried dozens of them on as well, been to numerous AD's ( I feel like if i go to the same ones to often they won't take me seriously so I have to change it up from time to time lol) And every-time I go, it becomes harder for me to select one with out feeling like I'll be missing out on another!

Commitment issues maybe? haha

Most folks won't get it. But then you don't need to justify.
If you crave it for a long time, work hard for it, craving, wanting, working... when you do finally get it, and forever after it will have special meaning.

Hairsprung, I guess the pedestal is something we conjure up in our own minds.

Much like a person we speak to on the phone for months and we come up with a mental image of the person.

Rolex is one of the finest watches around. There are other great watch makers too, but for all round reliability and value, it's hard to pass the Rolex.

My thoughts exactly!

Hence my name "Hair-sprung" the concept / reputation of the blue parachrome hair spring and everything the brand represents has me head over heals for lack of any better metaphor

When I finally took delivery of my first SS Datejust in the '80s, I was surprised at how nicely-made it was. It exceeded my expectations.

I think I am trying to say that these watches catch your eye in so many ways that no photo can do them justice. You will never get tired of looking at them and you will find that different models will have different personalities and delight you in different ways.

Each new model you see will delight you in previously unimagined ways creating a need for a new purchase. This will not end, ever...

We Harley owners have a saying:

"If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand"

It certainly holds true with Rolex also.

Couldn't agree more,

I think that is the reason why we gladly sit and talk with a fellow WIS for an hour or more sometimes and 100% the reason why this forum exists..

I looked for a year or so as well before I bought my first one, and then one month after I purchased another, and then another, and now I am on my sixth one. I love the thrill of a new watch. I think they have lived up to my standards and beyond.

In the music field, there is a malady called GAS. It's an acronym for Guitar Acquisition Syndrome for those of us who collect too many expensive guitars.

It looks like there are quite a few peeps on here who have bad case of RAS.....

I'm pretty sure I could never be disappointed with any of the models I'm interested in. I think the hardest decision will be which to purchase first. I fully anticipate owning numerous rolexes, I just need to figure out which ones represent / fit where I'm at in life the best - then move on to the next from there!

Oh the beauty of a great time piece..

Thanks again all!

I usually get buyers remorse when I purchase something expensive. However, I never experienced this when I purchased my Rolex. I really wanted it badly for many years and was truly happy when I finally was able to wear my own on my wrist. Sadly, my other non-Rolex watches now sit sadly in my vault.

When I pulled the trigger for the first time 18 months ago, I ended up having no regrets. I had a high opinion of Rolex before I bought it, and it has more than lived up to my expectations.

Ha...I guess I'm one of the rare few on this forum that had the exact opposite experience. I actually knocked Rolex off its proverbial pedestal for many, many years...I just didn't get the hype or the price justification. Back then I was an Omega man thru-n-thru (tried a few models over the years, yet always kept my original SMP Chrono as my go-to workhorse) while my closest brother ONLY used his Sub-Date. Regardless of how many times I tried his watch on, I seemed to always come away thinking, "Really??? What's the big deal?"

But, out of nowhere a few years ago I decided to take the plunge and buy a SD4000. At the same time I purchased an Omega PO Chrono. I had a feeling which would get the most wrist time (read: Omega) but in no time a funny thing started to happen - I was wearing the Rolex more & more.

That desire led to me joining TRF followed by an LV and standard Sub-Date purchase. Needless to say I was hooked and didn't even see it coming. Eventually all Rolex's were sold prior to my DSSD purchase...now it's my one & only! While other brands are still in the collection, my DS is the only watch getting any wrist time these days and I don't see it wearing off. Although the pedestal was not there originally for me, it's now fully in place and I'm lovin life. Cheers.

I guess apart from the replies to your thread above, you can look at the totality of the posts on this forum to see that the passion does not fade once you have acquired a Rolex and got it on your wrist.

If anything in many cases the force gets stronger, and you can be totally enchanted and besotted.

I lusted after one for many years.

I've only had my SD for 5 months now but I still catch myself staring at it and smiling.

If you can look at a watch and not know the time afterwards then it's a winner for me!

wow my first multi-page thread!

I think that it's a definite sign that the passion or obsession, how ever you look at it, does not fade!

I'm moving to Toronto next week and pulling the trigger 10 minutes after my stuff is un-packed.. I've waited long enough.

Problem is, I was 15 when I became obsessed, I figure that adds at least 2 more rolexes to my life time collection verses someone that catches the bug when they are in there 20's..
