am I missing something?

Look at this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Rolex-GMT-Master...QQcmdZViewItem

The seller claims it is a D-serial, but it is clearly not so...

I don't know about the serial number, but the box is definitely wrong.

Looks like it could be a D series, SEL and no hole case. But I am with Frank the box doesn't fit the watch. But I am new to this Rolex detective work so this is all an assumption on my part.

Serial is around 2005, box could have been the last of the AD's stock of the old boxes.

That's right the boxes are not put with the watch until it hits the AD right? So someone could have a new vintage watch with an old vintage box like Jen. I guess this could keep the bidding to a minimum if that makes people suspicious. Could mean a bargain for someone who knows what they are looking at?

yep. probably from a gray market dealer. Wrong box I'm guessing.

Why take a chance.

But I see your point. It could have been taken as something else.

That is older box and maybe the AD this watch came from had too many old boxes.
D series typically comes with the new box
