Rolex pricing...

Just got off the phone with my local Rolex AD. It's a local independent jewelry store, not a big chain or multi-outlet store and he's the owner so I get to "talk-turkey" with him from time to time. The subject of pricing came up and he said that Rolex just cut their margins on watches and is now requiring them to immediatley replace a unit as soon as it sold, so there is no inventory thining opportunity in these tough times.

With tighter margins will come smaller discounts and given the fact that he will be required to immediatly replace the item, his carrying costs of inventory will not be reduced. He is basically sick of Rolex trying to run his business and is considering pulling the line. Imagine that!

But unlike the Monopoly Debeers there are hundreds of other watch choices.

I would guess that in the future Rolex will open more Brand stores, like the one in South Coast Plaza, Costa Mesa. The inventory there is mind blowing, and they don't speak discount, atleast from my experience and the word around. Choke the market, and control prices...great.

Actually, the South Coast Plaza store isn't owned by Rolex. It's run by Baron and Leeds. But yes, they have an incredible selection.

Also, my closest AD is a Chinese jewelry store and get this, everything is priced at about $500 OVER retail. Then they work the price down until it's retail. Tried to pull a quick one on me once. Yikes!
