Thoughts on 186 Arktos?

I know the PAM 186 "Arktos" is now discontinued but have come across it a few times recently at used dealers. Have to say, really like the look of it and the story behind it.

From what I've read it was produced for an artic expedition sponsored by Panerai in 2002, by adventurer Mike Horn. Pretty amazing.... in a period of about 2 years he treked more than 20,000 kms around the arctic circle through Norway, Russia, Canada etc.. And all with the 186 strapped to his wrist - apperently it's good to -70 deg C...

I notice it's around $US 6K in the 2nd hand market - does anyone have any thoughts on appeal and collectability of this watch? Is it likely to get more sought after and pricey in the future? Or more of a "niche" thing?

Anyway, here's a pic of the 186 and exporer Mike Horn.

Common guys - there must be some opinions on the 186....

Love to hear them!

Collectible is low to nil, but you never know what the future holds. We can't predict the future.

In the sub line, tritium will be the collectible line for sure. Everyone loves patina.

Do you like it is the question.

Thanks - I do. But also really like the 24. I guess they look quite similar. There's always a dilema...

The 186 is very similar to the 092, except the 186 has the added GMT function. In terms of collectability, the 092 would be better because it was limited to 500 pieces world wide where as I believe Panerai were producing 500 pieces of the 186 annually.

I am not totally sure when they discontinued the production of the 186 though. The 186 and 092 were both first in production around 2004 from memory.

I had a 92 and had the toughest time selling it...

I have a 092 and to be honest it's not the most comfortable wearing watch in the world because of the domed back. I probably only wear it 10% of the time. I'm not too sure if the 186 has the domed back though.

I like it - simple... Different and interesting story. I like the skeleton hands. From a collectible perspecive - I agree 100 percent with mfer. It hasn't really taken off - hence the low price point and availability.

That however can be the diamond in the rough. Really though... With all of these pieces the chances of making money on a watch you bang around is in most cases unlikely IMO. There are a ton of watches out there. And some increase in value. Some hold their value and most lose value. Unless, you can get them at significant discount...

Buy it because you love it. Because there is a passion for it. This watch was built for an amazing explorer. Even uses "special" oil to withstand extreme temperatures... If you have that explorer in you and can relate - go for it. It's a neat watch and it might be inspiring for you. who knows... Maybe it ends up being the lottery ticket. Trouble is - if you end up liking it - it might be difficult for you to part with it. Just my opinion.

Good luck!

Thanks Jackson. I agree, you should go for what you love - actually was asking thoughts on collectability because I won't be able to buy one until next year wondering if they'll still be available it 2nd hand market (given they're discontined)...

Collectable or not, I like it! It's a special watch...and a GMT.

I would most likely opt for 88. Looks similar and just point the 12 at the sun and the gmt hand will point north. My AD had one which had some bezel issues. If you like it who cares.

Caveat 24 hour hand must be in current time zone (not GMT) and must be northern hemisphere. If in the southern hemisphere hold over your head and it points south.
