Why are all chronos so thick except Daytona

It seems Rolex is the only company that doesn’t make chronos so thick in height. Why is that? Other companies don’t have the tech? Would be strange at this point. I’m confused.

Well, a Bell & Ross BR05 is less than 11mm thick and half the price of a Daytona.

Plenty of options out there.

I think the Daytona’s sleek profile hides its 12.5mm height extremely well. There are other watches with similar thickness – AP’s 26320 at 10.8mm and the 5980 at 12.6mm with a display back (which always increases width) to make a couple.

Rolex is not the not the thinnest, yet very good. If you desire thinness...

Bvlgari Chronograph and GMT, display back, at only 8.74mil thick with 100m WProof

https://www.bulgari.com/en-us/103467.html

:
.

Chrono and GMT, display back, at 6.9mil thick with 30m WProof.

It's really just a trend for putting a chrono in a big watch. Most movements, even ETA's are perfectly capable of being in thinner cases.

Laureato Chrono: 38mm is 11.08 and 42mm is 11.90mm thick

There's also a Speedy reduced 39mm at 12mm thick

Omega also does a chrono that is 12.5mm thick

If you really want to go nuts you can get a BlancPain Perpetual + Chronograph that's around the same.

Lange Datograph Perpetual 13.5mm

Some sound options to choose from ;)

Only other chrono I would ever think of is the speedmaster. Other than that, Daytona is the king skinny or fat, small or large, whatever..king

The new Zenith El Primero Chronomaster Sport is 13.6mm thick which is one millimeter thicker than the Daytona, but it has a date wheel.

Because auto chronos have a rotor and a lot of chronos are modular.

The F. Piguet Chrono found in many high-end chronographs (e.g. AP) is also a very slim movement.

Long story short: chronos are under-appreciated for how horologically complex they are.

As others already stated there are so many manufacturers thinner than Daytona if that's you really wanted to know.

Daytona Thickness

Personally I like a little thickness in my watches. A thick Daytona would look out of proportion since it diameter is really 39mm.

Truly. I’m a awful fanboy but even that is too much for me.

Best in class chrono is definitely Bulgari’s. Hate it or love it, you can’t say it’s not a great watch. The caliber is phenomenal.

In reality barely a tenth of what the Daytona goes for.

Big as a space ship though, I believe that is what they had to resort to make it that thin

I love Chronos and I do find the daytona to be the best shape for me. This from all perspectives including:
shape - i like round watches
lug to lug - under 47mm is extremely good
Thickness -
Case size - it's actually under 40mm
Dial size - around 30mm

On top of this is it's a column wheel vertical clutch movement. I have TT, one day I'll own a full PM and SS... don't know when...

Thanks guys for inputs here. I guess I did inadvertently wind up as being a Rolex fanboy here...but funny enough, I don't like Daytonas...so I def wasn't going for that vibe.

I am guilty though of only thinking about the following brands: Tudor, Omega, Tag/Heuer, Zenith, Fortis, Breitling.

All seem to me to have thicker chronos than the daytona, and I don't get why that's necessary, which sparked my Q.

I never really looked at AP, never really cared for them, or some of the other brands mentioned.

Thanks again for inputs!

Too much that someone who doesn't like daytonas is too much of a daytona fanboy! Gotta love this forum and assumptions :)

Mmmmkay. Btw I have a Bvlgari Octo AND Daytona... and Speedy, had a PP 3970er 'Hamburger'...

Have fun I say. Enjoy your time

The Daytona is legendary for a reason. Same with Speedy too, and now the world record Bvlgari making its mark. So yeah, other brands may seem more fanboyish as they're just another chrono... except FP Journe, as he has an EPIC chrono I sooooo want one day.

Which is the fattest chrono ? Maybe the Tudor. That watch is a monster.
