From elation to disappointment

My brother recently purchased a DJ for his wife, and I reached out to his AD to see if they could secure a DJ41 for me. Lo and behold, I get a call a week and half later that they have what I want - white stick / white dial on jubilee with fluted bezel. I was happily surprised that they would call me so quickly, especially without ant real relationship with them.

The pictures she sends me of the watch are from the online catalog, and the dial looked a bit off, so I tried to confirm again - this is the white dial with white sticks, correct? A resounding "correct".

I have my parents go to the AD for pickup (I live out of state), and my Dad says it's nice, would I like to see a picture? Sure - at this point, I fully trust that the AD knows what they're doing. Well, I'm glad he said that because once I saw the actual picture of the watch, my heart sank. It was the silver dial with white batons.

I called the AD out on it, and they said "well, it looks very similar to the white dial". #1, no it does not. #2, how could this large AD make such a mistake when I asked more than once if this was the white dialed version?

I passed on it, and we'll see if they can actually come through or if I've slipped through the cracks and missed out on the only watch that they'll offer me - a watch that I didn't want.

Details matter, especially in the watch world!

That same exact thing happened to me once, the Ferrari dealer called to say that my new car had arrived.

When I went to pick it up, it was a red Honda Civic. I said, hey, this isn't what I ordered. They replied, "well, it's red, isn't it? The Civic is very similar to the Testarossa, just in a front-wheel drive format". And it gets better mileage.

Natch I jest. I think the thing here, that we often forget, is that for most sales people, it's just a commodity, a thing, stuff. "It's a red car, what more do you want?" And by the same token, "it's a Datejust, who cares what color it is?"

It's a common lament, that our sales people just don't know, often don't care, and don't have the passion for our things like we do.

I don't have a solution. I'm just sayin'... it happens.

And yes, I'm lovin' the Civic. Great car.

Would be an easy mistake to make but sounds almost like the sales rep was aware of it, which is weird.

Don't worry about "is it my only chance" etc... there's plenty of other AD's out there just start visiting some new ones. It's a DJ at the end of the day, they might not be ready to buy in the display windows but the wait wont be too long.

Unlike others I do not think this is an easy mistake to make - its a completely different dial and even the RGB colorblind could differentiate silver from white.

Glad you passed op - wait for the watch you actually want!

There's a lot of uneducated buyers out there who probably wouldn't spot the difference anyway. He was counting on it. Who knows how many times that SA managed to talk his way out before.

The level of knowledge at some A D's is really hit and miss. You'd think with the over abundance of typical nothing but DJ stock they'd be on it but now even a DJ is considered a hot model with lists. I assure you this wasnt always the case.

Luckily my guy is a watch fanatic. His knowledge is up there. Helps that we've been working together since 2012

On the bright side at least you got a call but I get it. Not what you want. Good luck getting the right one. Hope it all works out

Thanks for the responses, gents.

Seeing it from the perspective of others tempers my disappointment. I suppose not everyone is going to be as detailed as me, the customer, but still - you spend nearly 10k on a luxury item (which I know is a drop in the bucket for some), you hope that the sales people are more knowledgeable with what they're selling.

Also, the 41 is the only current steel DJ to have white/stick combo, so they’re likely used to seeing only white/Roman and silver/stick combo. Not sure if that factors in to seeming confusion?

I had the white dial, same configuration, was too summer looking for me and the dials stand out to much on the white, look big, so I sold it back. I think I’d rather have the silver after having the white.

The silver and white are very different in my eyes. Outside of the obvious color difference, one is gloss and one is sunburst.

I'd be annoyed with that, especially after multiple attempts to confirm the configuration. This is just a lack of attention to detail, something that AD's have been able to get away with in this environment.

Maybe this is a sign that you should keep you Sub.

Reading the title of this thread made me think it was about how women feel after saying “yes” when I ask them out, compared to the end of the date.

Silver vs White . The DJ41 looks better in Silver vs White in my opinion. Seems more of a seamless flow with the case and strap. My GP , some call it White some call it Silver.

Don’t think AD tried to do anything but try to make you happy. Obviously they failed.
You did mention it looked “a little off to you”. So if you were questioning it maybe they made an honest mistake. Nothing nefarious just human error.

I don't see how an experienced SA at a Rolex dealer who has handled the product for some time, would get the silver dial confused for the white dial.

I bet most new junior sales people candidly don't see enough watches to know what they are selling looks like in real life, especially as it's the senior people sent to the actual Rolex previews and product training instead of the entire team.

Can you imagine being a new SA and simply filling orders and informing customers to pick up for the seniors but never actually handling the product like when it was cases full?

I have both, all be it DJ2’s.

Personally I’d of gone with the silver dial. The radial brushing makes the sunburst really catch the light where as the white looks very bland.

But I realise it’s different strokes for different folks.
