How many watches is too many?

Asking for a friend.

No, but seriously, I would say 8 might be too many. If you go more than a week without wearing a watch, it's not being appreciated.

That said, if you have a dress watch you might wear it once a year (Eg Cellini etc).

"Talking watches" makes me feel like a pauper.

Anyone have insight?

5 is too much to me, but I’m in the minority.

3 in a rotation, and 1 oddball as the max.

Preferably just 3 total though.

Just personal choice. If you love having 1 or 100, there’s no right or wrong answer.

Anything more than 2 is too many but when you get into this hobby, it is very hard to stop, by the time I know, I have more than 20 now.

I think as long as you're happy with them, it's OK to keep them all and enjoy it.

I keep trying to float around 4 watches…but it’s hard to place limits like that, right?

If you're on this forum, you have either too many or not enough. Probably both.

I have a solution. Keep 4 watches at home. Leave the rest in a bank vault. And rotate out every few months.

I think what I really want is three, three watch collections, and a one watch collection.

Too much when you have to borrow money from a loan shark. LOL.

Seriously, I need one each for casual and formal, plus 1 as a spare/for fun.

I'm at 8, currently
I once said 7 was a good number
If money was no object I'd probably sit around 15 based on what i'm currently looking at.

I dont think there's a right or wrong number, but if you have pieces that get very little wrist time then i'd say they're redundant and should go.
Whether you replace it with something else is your call

Aside from my Dress Watch, every watch i own get at least 1 day a week on the wrist
Having Automatic/Manual Wind watches with a date window helps me keep track of what hasn't been worn in a while
Most mornings i just look at my collection and pick whatever has the oldest date showing on the dial
The 2 quartz watches i own are typically worn on Mondays and Tuesdays and the rest are rotated through based on last time i wore it or my mood

I currently have 5.

There are at least 5 more that I want.

You are asking the wrong crowd of people.

I cycle through about 15-20 watches and there are more that are no longer in the rotation.

They all have a place in my heart, so there are never too many.

When you don’t start wearing what you have. It could be 2 or a 100.

IMO the number in a collection is less relevant. Quality over quantity. And not quality in terms of Watch build, but the quality it adds to your collection. I think any watch not worn, connected with/bonded with, having some emotional tie to, or just unappreciated doesn’t belong.
