Protecting your watches! Are films any good?

I was scrolling through Instagram the other day and saw these plastic films that help protect your watches. Has anyone tried them? how do they look on the watch?

I think it looks ridiculous, watches are meant to be worn, scratches and all can be polished out at service.

I think the whole movement of obsessing over the exit plan of owning a watch is weird.

I'd never put those plastic stickers over any of my watches, I wear them all, but I am careful with them. I use safe cleaning techniques, I won't wear them if I know I will do any physical activity that could get them banged up, and I am "arm aware".

I just like having my watches look close to what they looked like the day I picked them up from the AD, you can have your cake and eat it too if you're careful. At first it will feel like the watch is wearing you, but once you get used it, you won't notice it.

But to each their own.

Yep. Open doors and such with the right hand abs rinse the watch before wiping with a cloth. All my watches look almost new. However, certain desks will scratch the clasp.

Instagram is a cesspool of poorly hidden marketing, with products directly out of China that extract huge premiums over their true costs.

Make no mistake, you are being sold products all the time while on the platform. The legitimacy of any product sold there isn’t worth talking about, because they aren’t made for anything else but scamming you.

All my pm watches have protector kits on. the PCL’s covered in scratches do not look good through my eyes. Nothing to do with resale as I am not interested in selling them.

I sometime wonder why Rolex makes one of the toughest mechanical watches made today.And in years gone by before all these plastic stuff, phone apps and rest of today Rolex watch toys.I wonder how the millions of these people managed perhaps then they just strapped there watches on there wrist to wear and enjoy them.And today just look at all the vintage Rolex watches around many 50 plus years old, still ticking and all survived without the aid of sticky back plastic and the rest of todays Rolex watch toys.

If the OP spent good money to get the watch, then it's fine if he wants to protect its pristine surface by protective film.

I'd say just try it out. It could help prevent scratches for a long while.

And if the worst happens and it gets scratch, you can always get it buffed at the AD or the RSC.

Light micro scratches are fine. Deeper scratches and dings are not recommended to buff as it could take out significant amount of material. Worse possible scenario is to ask the RSC to replace the case or the bracelets.

So everything's fixable in a way, but it'll cost you depending on the degree.

Oh boy, everyone do what they want, but personally, I‘d have a hard time keeping a straight face at the sight of this. Do you have a plastic cover on your couch too? Or a big rubber bumper strapped onto your Lambo? Sorry, looking at the picture of that BLNR, this is just so ridiculous. Who are you preserving this for? Clearly, you’re protecting someone else’s enjoyment of wearing a beautiful watch in its natural unencumbered state by restricting your own experience to nasty plastic stickers. And how does that even work over time? Don’t they curl and catch all kinds of grime and arm hair? What if you sweat? And even if they stay on over time, especially where gold is involved, won’t the glue react with the watch eventually? How ironic would it be to have to polish an essentially brand new watch just to remove the glue stains of the protective film?

Come on people, time to man up and live by that very accurate observation above, only wear the watch if you can afford to lose it/write it off entirely. Everything else is pathetic in my view.

Besides, with Rolex, it’s not like it’s delicate haute horlogerie you’d need to protect at all cost. They are not that expensive or finely made and they are deliberately devised as a sort of canvas you can imprint your life onto. The stories building up in the little swirls and scars are what make each one into a piece unique over time. That is the Rolex experience. So sticking them up in such an embarrassing condom is fundamentally opposed to what‘s at the core of their charm.

I think they look awful. What a way to ruin a beautiful piece of jewelry, by wrapping it in plastic that will cause more problems down the road.
