Icon3 Many say the Rolex drought really started with move to non-sequential serial numbers

To avoid being able to date how long a watch was potentially kept out of retail from production time.

Do you think this is true?

Interesting. Would there be anything else with the watch that would somehow date it?

Might this be a case of correlation appearing to imply causation?

Some say the movement serial number could tell but only rsc would know for certain.

Certainly possible

I visit other international watch sites and some of the comments suggest this and they’re not typically from noob members or poop posts.

I believe it’s coincidence but because Rolex is so secretive, who can know for certain?

I bought my random serial LV from grey market for $7500 around 2014....it's not the numbers, it's the watches. The Daytona has always been wait listed but when the BLNR came on the scene, coupled with a robust IG and YouTube presence, things began to change. The random serial numbers did nothing really, we know via the card when it was sold, and paperless watches sell for less.

If it started with anything, it's when IG became fully mainstream and popular with all demographics, circa 2016ish. Demand has been rising since the BLNR came on the scene.

I’m not nearly so well-traveled; my easy chair has interwebs training wheels, fyi. I don’t understand how or what one might have to do with the other. Sorry. Can you help with the international pundits’ possible explanation, please? TIA

I just Google it.

Most recently on the Habadookie comments sections since the Rolex ‘shortage’ presser.

I always believe whatever they say. They're always right, except when they're wrong.

I believe it more accurately coincides with the move to ceramic bezels.

I’ve heard people say that the ceramic material Rolex uses is infused with a powerful narcotic which causes feelings of warmth, satisfaction, self entitlement and obese self esteem.

Unfortunately, the sensations fade as the narcotic gradually dissipates, requiring yet another “fix”.

This leads to sequential purchases in search of that first high, driving up prices as roving bands of Cerachrom addicts prowl the ADs in search of that much needed dose.

Ok, thanks.

This is what I found:

they stopped designating serial # of watches by year of production. This enable them to change supply of watches to market and manage inventory to keep scarcity.

I am pretty sure it is not Rolex controlling supply but primarily unusually high demand triggered by Justin Beiber's public appearances wearing a Daytona.

Nope, it’s gotta be a fact. Look, the drought in California started at about that time too. No reasonable person could believe it’s all a coincidence.
