Payment at front
Hi, is normal an AD ask you to pay the full price at front?
Is just happened to a friend in Paraguay in an official dealer , they told they can put him on the Daytona SS list but he need to pay the whole thing at front and wait two years? |

Speaking for myself would not pay upfront for anything, especially the most over hyped watch in Rolex history the modern Daytona. And if anyone pays for anything before holding it, or having any product in there hands. Then they either have more money than sense or be sixpence short of a shilling IMHO.

I personally know a dealer that does this with no intent to deliver. Its interest free money that in 2-3 years he can pay back or continue to string along if the customer is willing.

yep, told him the same, if the AD truly want to sell him a Daytona he dont need to ask him money in advanced since in the very weird situation that they buyer backs off the deal, he sell immediately to any of the thousands customers waiting for him. So I no see point in ask money in advance for this particular watch...

No. This is him asking for a interest free loan with no guarantee of paying it back. Never ever do this.

I did exactly this in 2016, paid up front MSRP to the AD, second watch I bought from them, received my 116500 white dial in spring of 2017.

I would not expect an AD to be the kind of establishment where you have to pay upfront

There used to be an AD near me who did this, and I never committed cuz I was skeptical. Then the pandemic hit, and I was laughing at those poor suckers who paid up front. But after the pandemic, the AD did fulfill all of those orders. Now I'm the poor sucker who regrets not putting down that payment for a Pepsi. It is true that you have to be careful of scams, but if you can get official documentation like receipts and emails to say that the watch is being held in trust, then I think you should go for it.

Nope. Terrible idea, and i would have zero confidence in him actually getting the watch. Imagine if they do this 20-30 times across various pieces, easy way to put $400k in the bank for free.

I had to pay "up front in full" in order to obtain a Grand Seiko SBGA413 'Shunbun' Seasons watch <from the local Hyde Park Jeweler.>
They DID promise me that the watch would be obtained through their Regional Distributor within 6 weeks. (This was moments after the Sales gal came back after having excused herself to go call the Regional Distributor to check on availability.) The watch arrived in a week instead of six. I was quite pleased with Hyde Park (my first purchase from them) and the up-front information they gave me. I had also just obtained from them a Tudor Heritage Advisor, which they had to have shipped in for me from their Denver store. THAT alone gave me confidence in their business practices. (They did not make me pay up front for the Tudor.) Now - they 'guaranteed' me they could get the GS, as they stated. Any particular Rolex, on the other hand, - - - who knows if the AD's can locate a particular model. Rolex is not Grand Seiko as far as "availability." Those are also two different sales structures being run and managed differently, I would assume. This was the first and only time I had ever put out money up front, but Hyde Park convinced me that this was a "done deal" for the Grand Seiko, so I trusted them. Would I do this again? Our local Hyde Park, yes. Anyone else - not too sure. They would have to REALLY convince me of a particular guaranteed availability, just as Hyde Park did.

If it’s a well established AD and has also other luxury brands on sale and also gives a full receipt then no harm if wait time is up to one year.

Most dealers would never do that, but the foreign countries are like the wild wild west. They do as they please. And usually the Daytonas go to customers they already know and trust that are good for the money, so why would an AD need money up front for one? It doesn't make sense. My AD will order me pieces and never ask for a deposit because i've done so much business and they know i'm good for it.

I asked the boutique AD in Miami to get real and get the DSSD Deep Blue JC in 2015 and then the new 116500 white dial in 2016. Paid both up front and received them both in under a year. I visited other ADs at that time and I could barely get them to talk to me much less get watches I wanted. I would do it again today for the new 116508 Meteorite dial but they won’t take the deposit because they can no longer guarantee they can get that watch…

I would definitely think twice about this these days as my local AD lost their Rolex franchise. That might have gotten complicated if I had a deposit with them. Ahh, the good old days

Maybe on some weird order that only he wants, but not on the hottest model in the lineup.

I would not pay in full considering that many ADs are loosing the Rolex Line. Also, how can they estimate 2 years when no AD knows how many Daytonas they will get allocated. Day they take 20 full payments for Daytona’s which it’s not hard to achieve and they only get 5 Daytona’s in 2 years. That’s an arbitrary timeframe. Also, what if the AD goes out of business? But wait you already paid for it and are on a list with the AD and not Rolex.

I have paid large deposits or full price upfront at corporate boutiques (Omega, AP), but would think hard and long doing this at an AD.
