1) “It’s the classic size” — does anyone else make a 36mm watch? Not Patek. Not AP. Not Omega. Not Grand Seiko.
Actually, that's not correct: The Constellation Master Chronometer (the Omega that I consider the closest analogue to a DJ) comes as 36, up 1mm from the previous Constellation Coaxial at 35. Similarly, AP offers the RO in 34 and 37 (I can't recall if these are said to run large or small).

Datejust 36mm or 41mm?

36mm watches have stand the test of time. Who knows that when you children grow up 41mm will be too big as it was at some point. I doubt bigger than 41mm will ever be a thing…

As a previous person told you it also depends how big their frame is. If you are a big guy and have kids as big as the heavyweight champ Tyson Fury jajaja a 36 will be too small regardless of trends.

Best of luck my friend, either way your kids will be proud and will enjoy whatever you gift them.

Throw in a Cartier Santos medium which sells extremely well to men and is only 35mm.

Haha totally depends on the wrist then overall body size. Some weird combinations: big tall guy but thin wrists then gets confusing

You kind of posted that to make a point but actually fail to understand there is another side to the coin. I love 36. I have a 41dj. Sometimes I think it’s too big. Sometimes it’s great. I’m in between both sizes unfortunately. And YES I have seen sky dwellers on this forum that do look ridiculous, (borderline cringeworthy) regardless of bracelet they wear like dinner plates on thinner wrists.

The right size is the one that makes you happy. (Then there is the logical reasoning, lugs overextending means it’s too big. Then the mathematical formula vis a vis wrist size, but now it’s getting complicated.)

Nice post! Hope to write one like this too.
I will buy 36 mm and with the price difference I will chose a dial that tomorrow will be hard to find or discontinued. Proportions are not good in the 41 mm regardless the wrist size.
