Description

This is the Universal Geneve Compax reference 12494. Universal Geneve was founded in 1894 and was the first company to release a wristwatch with the chronograph function in 1917. A brand once heralded in the same breath of Omega and Longines, UG has suffered due to the Quartz Crisis that occurred in the 1970s. Once a horological favourite, UG has remained dormant for many years, reeling from the after-effects of the Quartz Crisis. Their first Compax was manufactured in 1936 and its popularity caught on with it’s symmetrical dial and chronograph function. This particular reference is powered by the Universal Geneve Calibre 285. The in-house movement has remained reliable and relevant even though it was first produced in 1942 due to UG’s engineering ability. Even today, UG’s timepieces that contain their in-house calibres are far more sought after than their later Lemania counterparts. In addition, the serial and references are still very visible on the caseback which is uncommon for UG’s of this period. There is also an F.A.B (Forca Aerea Brasiliana) stamped above the serial representing the air force branch of the Brazilian Armed Forces, indicating that this was a possible military issue.

Condition

This Universal Geneve 12494 is in excellent vintage condition. There are hairlines on the case from prior wear consistent with its age but overall, nothing major of note. The caseback has some light hairlines but remain in very good condition. The caseback engravings of the serial and reference are still clear. The dial is clean with no signs of aging and is triple signed case, dial and movement.
