There are two basic movements, the 22xx and 32xx, that make up the vast, vast majority of Rolexes. Some have date, day or 2nd timezone complications, but they're pretty well related to one another. The Daytona, on the other had, is completely its own beast. Case, as well, has no commonality with others.

For a company operating at that scale, this has to be a consideration.
Yes this is what I've heard as well, also heard that they have a tiny team of watchmakers specifically for the Daytona. And to train new watchmakers specifically for the Daytona it takes ages, so scaling up is a long and drawn out process.

I do still believe that Rolex plays on that info as an excuse though, I'm sure the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Sorry brother. I have no idea who got it and how long they had been waiting.

All I know is I didnt and it was the first he had ever seen. Dont think there is a waiting list for the Rainbow.

I'd guess thats just a situation of the A D getting lucky and some VIP/lucky/money to spend/once in a lifetime customer

Platinum and Metoerote, they get 1-2 per year.

SS - I think around 6 a year, with no idea what dial. I waited 3 years for mine and I have significant purchases history.

OF - I waited over a year for one dial I requested, was offered others.

Most of them said they received 24 SS per year but not always in pairs and 2 Platimum per year. Interesting one of them told me that they expect receive a single shipment for the whole 2022....

I mean there may be a calculation based on a metropolitan area, but I was told 4-6 per year of SS Daytonas back in like 1998 and this was a small AD.

Wow that was a while ago. Production must have increased since then?

There’s also something to be said for being able to (slightly) prolong production planning decisions. The more parts multiple watches have in common, the longer Rolex can wait to decide which to make.

It’s part of why I’m being heavily on something else (Air King is my guess) living in the 36mm Explorer case next year: like the YM37, it literally shares its case and bracelet with no other watch. Ok, removable links same as OP34, but I digress and digress again…

Well who knows if that was accurate but it was the owner himself and we bought many watches from them. But I recall the two tone Daytonas were higher but forget the specific number. But things were much different then. I got my u series submariner in Christmas 1998 and according to what I can tell, the watch was made in fall 1997 and so it sat at that AD for almost a year before it was sold. The sport models were not the hot commodity it is now, but there was (I was told) a 2 year wait list even then for the SS Daytona.

Two years even back then, unreal. That really makes me think they aren't going to touch increasing production at all if Rolex has had a waitlist for one of their models for that long. It also makes me lean even more towards the idea that they have somewhat created this "high demand, low supply" issue themselves and would prefer it to stay as it is even if they've stated otherwise.
