Weird experience at the Rolex boutique
I was at the Rolex boutique yesterday and the cases were empty. I have a specific Datejust in mind and the SA said he can bring out a similar Datejust for me to try on. He was giving me the whole spill about Rolex and how special they are. He then ask me if I know how to set a Rolex and he can show me . At this point he knows I’m wearing the 1675 and I’ve asked him some pretty specific questions that he should know I didn’t walk into a watch shop for the first time. I was taken aback for a second because I thought why? That’s not a perpetual calendar or some complicated watch it’s just a Datejust. I told him it’s ok I know how to set a watch. So we talked some more and I was getting ready to leave. He asked me again if I have anymore questions and if I’m sure I don’t need him to show me how to set the watch. Super weird, must have been a very slow day and he was looking for something to do.
I should have humored him and let him show me. Maybe there’s something I need to know about setting a watch. |

That’s a lot better than most experiences. Now the sales people just want you to leave as fast as possible

Most have been his first day. Next time he will greet you with the famous phrase "Sir, we have no inventory. Please check back in a few months"

And don't forget my favorite line from an AD: "We're not a museum here, sir, we don't want people to just browse".

Weird experience at the Rolex boutique
Quote:
I wonder if he was trying to explain this very finicky detail (grabbed from an article online)….which my watchmaker told me about recently. “The danger zone of watch setting is between the hours of 9pm and 3am. During this time the gears are in movement to switch the date.” The bigger question is why are they hiding datejusts in the back? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

That rule applies to other brands or movements like an ETA 2824 for example. |

Isn't weed legal in Canada. Maybe the AD just dosed before you arrived?

Strange, given the number of 'exhibits' they display!

Next time, take him up on the offer. He might of been hinting he has what you're asking for. You have nothing to lose!

May be the one he tried to show it to you was Sky Dweller not DateJust (they look similar to some people).
The way to set this watch is more complicated than DateJust.

That’s why I stopped and hesitated just to make sure he doesn’t have a Skydweller in his hands but no it’s just a plain old Datejust.

How do they make money not having inventory? Rolex must structure SA's on non or little commission salaries due to 'the situation'.

Wonder why he kept asking the same dumb question. Never been asked that once.

Could have been a new sales associate trying to look good and be helpful.

My guess is that the SA was bored and trying to kill time. It must be brutal working there with nothing on display and you just become a door greeter lol.

Sales associate was probably newer...trying to be friendly and helpful. Nothing wrong with that. Sounds like he was much nicer and more interested in what he was selling that a lot the sales staff I have encountered at Rolex boutiques.

Dealers are making tons of profit right now with no effort and no discount not to mention buyers who feel the pressure to buy other jewellery simply to get an entry level Rolex.. This is the best time in history to own a Rolex AD. |

I talked to two different SAs in two different ADs they both said Rolex is still shipping the normal amount of watches but they’re sold as soon as if not before they came in. I mean these store locations I visited are AAA retail locations I can’t even start to guess what they pay for their lease there every month. How else could they keep their doors open? It must be nice for them that even the slower moving references are all sold out but it must also be frustrating to know they can sell a lot more but there’s no product to sell. Then again if Rolex cranked up production to keep up with demand will their watches be as desirable as it is now? Exclusivity is a funny thing, the harder it is to get the more people would want. |
