“Chunky” vs Wrist size

Wondering if there’s some sort of consensus on what size case is best suited for a particular size wrist? I have a 8” wrist but tend to like larger watches. Is chunky an appearance adjective or a felt and observed description based on wearing the watch. I am seriously considering a new D-Blue Cameron but don’t want for it’s large size to be almost comical when worn with anything other than a wetsuit. Thoughts or insight from anyone who wears one regularly? Thanks.

Welcome to the forum.
This very issue is well covered back and forth within the forum one way or another.
I have both 116660's and wear one of them pretty much all day every day without any issue unless I'm doing something that would seriously risk damaging the watch unnecessarily.
Or Jack hammering, in which case I would come off second best by the time the watch was finished with me. Lol.
I even wore my JC on my wedding day under the cuff without any issues.
My wrist is nicely north of 7" with a flat shape and it's all good

The best thing will be whatever feels right to you. There is no right or wrong answer. I think a deep see would look great on an 8” wrist, as would a 40/41mm sub. Best thing is to just try it on and see how it feels to you.

Welcome!! I own a DSSD and my wrist is much smaller than yours. At 8” you’ll have no problem whatsoever. It’s a gorgeous robust watch. Ask your dealer if you can try one on that they may have in the back and see for yourself. Keep us posted.

With an 8" wrist you will have no problem with width. Watch height, however, is an independent issue that will also effect practicality.

It's all about your own perspective IMO. I personally wear a Datejust 36 up to a 47mm Panerai 127 and many in between. They all look great on my wrist.

There is no consensus, just opinion and personal taste. If you think a watch looks good on you, it does. If you are happy with the fit, it's a good fit.

Welcome aboard.

It’s a large, chunky watch but Rolex has a way of making cases that suit a wide variety of wrist sizes and shapes. You’ll see many owners here on this forum who have wrists of 6.5-7” wearing this model. Wrist shape has as much more to due with than size

What finally made me move on from this reference was the weight and case height which caused comfort issues. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a badass watch, beautiful in fact, but it became a watch I’d only wear every so often, and I just couldn’t justify keeping it. YMMV

Welcome. Watch size is about personal preference and how thing appear to you. An 8 inch wrist is a larger wrist and I would want to wear a watch that is proportional to both your wrist and the rest of you. The DSSD is a cool watch and amazingly over engineered and I think it could be worn without looking chunky on the right person, that appears to be you. Check out the SD43 at 43mm as an alternative. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Howdy! A DSSD will look absolutely awesome on your wrist, IMHO. If anything, you might find the smaller Submariner to not have quite as much wrist presence as you would like, whereas the DSSD (especially the JC variety) will really pop (as would the SD43).

A lot of Rolex dealers are now beginning to stock display models, so you may be able to find an AD near you that would have some watches you could try on to see how they fit you (and, with the bigger watches, how well they fit under the long sleeve shirts you may regularly wear.)

Nothing to worry about. People on TRF with 6.5” wrists are always talking about how great 42 to 43mm watches look on them. LOL

No consensus really.

Now if you are a large man (+6’4” 250lbs), 40mm and up is necessary. If you are more modest in stature (-5’6” 150lbs), don’t go bigger than 40mm.

It’s important to consider wearability, too. Can you wear a Deepsea all day? Or, will you take it off as soon as you come home and potentially leave it in your watchbox?

Deepsea JC is better than the plain seadweller. I think its more about your height and frame and less about your wrist for larger watches.

Size is not the problem. The fit of the case and the weight should be of concern

According to the data, the average male wrist is 7”. Assuming the accepted watch for said size is 40mm, then wrist in mm divided by 4.4.

One could use similar in a lug to lug model.

For me, lug to lug length is the most important measure of how a watch fits on my wrist. Second would be height (thickness).

I’ve a 7¾"wrist and comfortably wear 40-44mm, from the svelte Submariner @40mm and 12.7mm deep to my IWC IW3890-13 @44mm and 16.5mm deep I did have a DSSD but that extra 1.2mm seemed to make it wear and look wrong, sold it to my friend and he loves it.

You have a huge wrist. There's not much that isn't going to look/go right on your wrist. But again, it's all a matter of personal style, taste, and comfort.

DSSD is not a “big” watch per se, It’s just an out of proportions thick watch, but an interesting time piece nonetheless.
Try a 126600, same footprint as the DSSD but not as thick.

Do what you feel works. I have a 42mm in the mirror it looks large on me, but when looking down on my wrist to see what time it is or just admire my watch it looks perfect.
