Hulk Hype
Can anyone actually put a reason why the Hulk hype went crazy ?
With the 'John Mayer' Daytona there was an actual ground zero of when and why the hype started. I'd say that before the Hulk Hype other than new releases and of course the steel Daytona Current Rolex watches usually sold under retail price. Even the Kermit wasn't really difficult to get when it was discontinued. I'd just like to know Why the Hulk model started all this Rolex Hype ? |

I just wondered if there was a defining moment that caused all of this ? I still believe all of the current Hype in the Rolex market today started with the Hulk |

The years of speculation that it would be discontinued then piled fuel on the fire, then when it actually happened, well one look at the Chrono24 price graph tells the story.
I think post #3 above sums it up pretty succinctly though. |

I remember one year seeing them in windows, then the next they’re gone. I think it’s fear of missing out and hype really. I personally have a hulk and absolutely love it. Although it’s nice to see it appreciate, I won’t sell, so it’s wooden dollars for me. I’m almost getting nervous wearing it now |

When the SA finished bagging it up for me she pulled another one out from under the counter and put it in the display case Yeah I feel the same , I wore mine for work for years and its well scratched and worn ,If I ever needed the money then of course I'd sell them as they're only watches, hopefully that day will never come |

I think the Hulk and the SS BLRO accelerated it at round about the same time. The LV was getting coveted after some years of pretty average or below average desirability. The BLRO went crazy the day it launched and the hype which was already building, particularly around the LV, seemed to get supercharged. My AD closed their SS BLRO waiting list before the end of its first day on sale. I rang them on day two! |

i would agree instagram was the trigger for not only the hulk but a number of manufacturers and watches.
also as the kermit was appreciating, there was definitely an element of fomo on the current production reference. happy I got mine in march 2017 before the madness kicked off! |

All the Sunburst dials have a magic about them when the sun hits , I'm surprised dealers didn't try and get some better lighting in their showrooms to show it off more, im guessing these days there's no need as the models are all sold anyway |

I bought mine 5 years ago, for slightly under retail would you believe, and then a couple of weeks later disco rumours started and the price bumped up by a grand or so, then when Basel came around a few months later and the false rumours did not lead to a market correction I knew then something was seriously up and driving prices, regardless of the actual market news, and this we know now was due to massive QE, Stockmarket and Crypto rises, the Chinese Gift Buying again, the Brexit caused foreign demand surge and ofc all this exacerbated to extremes with social media highlighting and thus hyping where the money was going.

Same with your reply but the truth often hurts the ones are ruled by what I plus others in this thread have stated.

I'm in my late 50s, and my experience is that Rolex watches have always been seen as status symbols. Rolex marketing reinforces this idea. No-one has needed a mechanical watch since the 1970s, they have become a form of jewellery.

Well myself now almost 79 and I can remember my Father taking on two jobs and saving for almost 5 years to buy is first Rolex. And as he was just a simple man and a coal miner I am sure he did not save and buy his Rolex for any sort of status symbol. But agree today Rolex watches have become just jewellery to many now, that think nothing more of them as being a status symbol.

Because he wanted to own a mechanical watch that would last a lifetime and beyond and now his 6263 watch belongs to me. And would not sell it at any price as it reminds of my Father and how his life was cut short at just 55.Mostly by being attacked by a German battle ship and reported missing in action in world war 11. His aircraft carrier was sunk and only around 32 out of a crew of around 1200 survived, he was in the very cold water for around 32 hours before being picked up by a Norwegian fishing boat. Plus his many years underground as a coal miner from a 14 year old boy, IMHO had a large part in his very short life. Although at the time of WW11 he as a coal miner was in a reserved occupation he lied about his age although only 17, he said he was 18 and went to war to fight for his country.

I admit it, the demand for the LVc all started with me. I am the catalyst to take the LVc from display case zero to gotta own it hero.
The real reason is the LVc took off is it was released ahead of its time. This is true for a few other models the average Rolex buyer didn’t under stand. Then when people take notice, FOMO sets in and they run out to buy it which snowballs. At this point people look around and see how long this unloved watch has been being produced and then begins to worry it may get discontinued. This throws fuel on the FOMO fire and you have the new blue print of todays new “hot Rolex” models.
