Watch appraisals

I need to update my Appraisals on my watches, for my insurance.

Where did you get your watches appraised ?

In my home town the Rolex Boutique has an appraiser come in once a week, at $125 for the first watch appraised, and $85 per watch thereafter.

I have about 10 watches to update the appraisals on, and wasn’t sure if these prices were the going rate for appraisals, or if I needed to look somewhere other than the Rolex Boutique.

Appraisals IMHO are in most cases a licence for them to print money.

You need an appraisal from some insurance companies. People keep mentioning Hodinkee insurance through Chubb, but I am able to get watch insurance at 50 percent the rate with USAA.

As for the appraisal, we all know the value of these watches. I’d much rather send in a picture of the watch online, pay $40, and be done with it … versus taking my watch to a licensed gemologist, paying them $200 per watch, and having to leave the watch with them for an hour while I wait. Multiple that by 10x if you’re the OP.

Like all appraisals they are only as good as the paper they are printed on, and whether the insurance company pays out to the appraisal value.

Well, the insurance company has accepted the appraisal and updated the policy for that valuation. So there’s that …

I have not updated an appraisal in a long time … but I’m with all you above … $125 for something I already know / something I could research online in about 5 minutes, made me think I better solicit the opinions of my fellow collectors.

I get of course the condition / and working condition of the watch … but we all know / can research easily the value of a 3 year old Submariner.

Like Padi said … what a market !!!

I spend $1,000 this go around for appraisals, and then how long is it before I need to do it again, the way these watches are changing in value ???

God forbids a country and companies operating under its laws are doing business such as insurance, and god forbids the system works and have people appraise, insure, lose and receive settlements…
