Well, Im left with quite a difficult decision. Last week I made an attempt to buy an Omega 2531.80 and found the seller was trying to pass off a fake.
So yesterday I went to a dealer to take a look at buying a brand new one.
Of course I was wearing my 16610 at the time.

The dealer was very accommodating and not only had a new watch, but had a pre-owned one with all boxes and papers for a considerable savings over new.
They also had a pre-owned 2210.51.00 Planet Ocean Chronograph that was very interesting.

As we talked, the saleswoman asked if I would be interested in trading the 16610 in toward either of the watches and I explained that was not likely unless I was given a rather substantial cash settlement. She left for a few moments and came back to tell me she would offer both the 2531.8 and the 2210.51.00 and $500 for the 16610 if I would bring in the box and papers.

I have had no less than one and as many as 6 Rolex watches since I was 18 years old. I am currently down to 2 and was not in the market to get rid of either of them. BUT, I have also owned several Omega's over the years and they have always been excellent watches. In fact, it has always been my opinion that Omega did as good a job at building watches as Rolex, with the exception of the fact they are all eta based movements.

So, I have until 6pm today to decide... Opinions are welcome, and appreciated.

I would do the trade (providing you love the Omegas).

I am biased! My love is for Rolex.

Therefore I would not trade a Rolex for Omegas.

If Omega watches are your "Alpha and Omega," then by all means, go for it.

If not, however, then heck no.

the question would be which watch(es) would hold their value overtime. I personally do not know the answer, but that is what I would be looking to figure out before I made the trade...

I suspect the Rolex, but have no hard facts for the position

I would not buy one watch over another for the reason that I thought it would will hold its value unless I was just going to keep it in a safe.

The real answer is buy the watch that you love, talks to you and you will want to wear all the time!

Here is a little of my thought, and where I am leaning...

I am not a "Rolex" guy... I appreciate the art of timekeeping. I hope to not get flamed for this, but it has been my experience that even MUCH less expensive watches can be as accurate if not more than a Rolex. And some at a much lower price point can me as interesting if not more interesting.

My only hesitation at this point is that a Submariner has been the one Rolex that I have owned since I was 18. NOT THIS ONE, but I have always had at least one. As JJ said awhile ago, the 16610 IS THE Rolex.

I think I am going to get my boxes and their contents and head down to the shop. Make a stop at a local pub for a drink or two, and see how I feel when Im leaving.

Ya never know, maybe I will come home with something new, and maybe I wont.

The only decidsion for me would be if I really wanted the two watches and didn't see it as a two for one offer..

sounds a good deal to me if you are not mad on the sub, however as you have owned a sub since you were 18 sounds like you will own another in the future

Omega is also a fine brand. They have been using ETA movements the last few years, after Swatch bought them. Omega before this had their own proprietary movements. ETA, was a part of Eterna originally and is a fine movement that powers many watch brands, I see no reason to disparage it. Omega, with their newer co-axial escapement, might even be said to be a mechanically more advanced design that those which Rolex is currently using. So far, the co-axial movements seem to be holding up just fine. Rolex movements are also very good.

Regarding the trade, well, if you want to make a switch, it seems to me that this is a good offer. Personally, I like the iconic Submariner look and I always seem to come back to it. If you want a change of pace for a time, it seems like this would be a good opportunity. On the other hand, I suppose that the Submariner could increase in value (on the used market) because I am guessing the updated version might be out next year. Many people find the historical connection valuable. For me, it would depend a little on your financial ability. If you don't have extra money to buy watches often, I might keep the Submariner even though the Omegas are also good watches. But it's impossible to predict what will happen in the future. I would never trade in a rolex for Omega. But, if you need the cash, Better to sell on the forum for a better deal than trade.

Look at it from this stand point. "The Dealer" is working on wholesale, so they feel they can make the trade, give you cash and still make money. Would you be able to make your money back on the two Omega's. IMHO I don't think so.

I agree that for an investment it was not a great deal.
But its always nice to change the collection up a bit.

You can't wear 2 watches at the same time, and a sub would look better IMHO than any number of omegas.

I think you made the right decision. The Omegas are nice for sure but easily obtainable on the used market and I think at a better price then this transaction would have provided.

I own 2531.80 and 16610. 2531.80 is a fine watch but I wouldn't trade my 16610 for it.
