Yes, all the time. In fact, I see way more expensive/rarer watches pretty frequently.

I posted something similar but in Philly - There were several news reports about a string of robberies specifically targeting Rolex watches over Nov/Dec (you can find the articles/TV spots with a quick google search).
Coincidentally enough, I was travelling for a meeting earlier this week and stopped at a rest stop for a min and felt the need to conceal my watch as much as possible.

Looks like a decent restaurant, unfortunately the state of affairs in many cities today. I don't wear expensive anythings in town anymore.

I do often, but also don't wear other jewelry, let alone diamond bangles, gold chains, or gold rings as the unfortunate gentleman in this story did. Not that I'm immune, of course.

Is it just me or does anyone else get feeling this was not random? Someone working there makes call alerting friends?

I will say when I travel to Baltimore and Washington I tend to avoid wearing expensive pieces these days. And when I do I make sure they are covered by a jacket or sleave when on any sort of public transportation. Sad state of affairs these days. A few years ago I never gave it a thought.

I don't think Rolex was the main target here, sounds like many other flashy items triggered this. It really depends on the smaller details. Long sleeves, anything covering their watches?

I haven’t been to nyc in a while, but 184th street is pretty far up there. Seems like risky behavior to wear 140k in jewelry publicly in that area.

this was my first thought. 184th isn't really where you'd be prowling for rolexes at random.

Gee, do you think a waiter or other employee might have tipped off the robber?

I'm wearing my Rolex watches everywhere I go. But they're all SS models. Rarely somebody notices my watches. It looks like suspect new who and what he was after.

Can happen anywhere, any time, to any one, regardless of the city/country. The dateline on this story could have been Miami, or Cleveland, or London, or Madrid, etc ...
I'm a longtime New Yorker, and will continue my normal watch-wearing habits. You just need to be smart, use common sense, and don't flash anything. The danger here, or anywhere, has always existed and always will. |

Just think of the crimes not reported. The upward trend in violent crime has significantly increased in these cities the last 14 months to the point the political spin to hide it doesn’t work anymore.

“A Rolex and………….two diamond bangles, three gold chains and two gold rings”
Come on now. I know some people loves these nice accessories, but most of us wear one watch. I’ll keep wearing what I wear whenever I go to NYC. |

There may have also been a fatal collision somewhere in NYC yesterday. Does that mean you shouldn't get in a car ever again?

Yes. I wear my watches pretty much everywhere. I don't flash/flex them. No problem.

I grew up in NY and I never heard of the "Hudson Heights" neighborhood referenced in this article. Turns out it is an invention of real estate brokers as a sort of code for 'gentrified area of Washington Heights.' I guess maybe not so gentrified just yet.

Sounds like anarchy in the US at the moment but a couple of years ago London was getting similarly hysterical media attention over mutant moped gangs slashing the population up like Freddy Kruger.
It’s likely this is the same deal - overly hyped distortion of reality to paint the bleakest picture imaginable. I bet less than 0.0000000001% of Rolex wearing “events” in NYC end in violent crimes/thefts. |

Situational awareness can help but there are times when common sense make the most sense, as in don't wear it all at once. Sometimes less is more.
