Sending in watch for appraisal.. Are they trustworthy?

I have an old SD 16660 that I don’t want anymore. There are some online companies that will give you an offer for your watch, but…. they ask you to send your watch in to them for them to evaluate it first.

To me, this seems like pure inanity.

Am I missing something here? How on earth do these companies acquire watches this way? Do people just ship them their Rolexes and pray to god that it comes back?

Yes many people do
It also means once they have your watch you’re more likely to accept their offer

In this market if you need a shipped appraisal to sell a SD instead of a Pledge for $35 some good images and transparency, you should let someone handle it for you or go local.

It’s not a hard watch to value.

You can do bobs watches. They will low ball you but shipping is fast and insured. I'd say 20% less than a private sale. I sent then a watch in the past. Declined the offer. They shipped it back next day air across the country. Newport Beach to NYC.

It's not all as scary as you describe.

Are you seeking an appraisal for insurance purposes?

You expect them to make you an offer without inspecting the watch? That would be insantiy on their part.

If you live in Arlington Va. There are numerous brick & mortar dealers that you could visit to get their offer. Why go online?

Doesn't sound like its for. you. You're already anxious and skeptical about the process. Find a local place to appraise it or, otherwise, sell it on this forum.

I wouldn’t go this route. Anything can happen once it’s off your hands. Go to a trusted jeweler and shop around to see which one offers the most and to see if they are within the same range.

I've sold watches and have never shipped without getting a quote 1st. Usually they just want some pics and watch details. They will tell you that the price quoted may change if the watch needs any work or is not as described.

Go over to Pentagon City and walk into Tourneau, and I’m sure they’ll make you an offer (albeit, a very terrible and low offer) on the spot.

I sold 2 watches to DavidSW.

Told him what I would sell them for, sent pictures of the watches using the same angles he uses to advertise on his website, he agreed pending examination, sent them in and he wired me my asking price.

Easy!

Key is to be thoroughly honest about condition and provide good pictures.

. . . and sell to a trusted source!

Sorry folks, it’s an 116600. Not 16660.

Swiss Made dial with lug holes, I'm thinking manufacture between 1999 and 2003 (A to Y serial give or take). Should be about 9500-10000 USD as a watch only. Condition (polished vs unpolished) and accessories (presence or lack of original warranty paper) can increase the value.
