Trade 39 mm Explorer for new Sub Date

Fellow watch people, I need some advice. I bought my Explorer from a small AD. In speaking to my AD about buying a new DJ41 and new Sub Date. The AD brought up the point that I could also consider trading my Explorer. I bought it in May 2019. It has been my daily watch since. I am careful with my watches in general and it has a few marks around the clasp and one small mark on the bezel. Other than that, it is pretty much pristine.

In looking at comparable Explorers from 2019, they appear to be going for 12K. I paid $7200 for mine with taxes. Am I out of line if I tell my AD I would be ok with trading the Exp but I need $9200 for it? Even taking into consideration he may want to have it polished, I think he would stand to make well over 2K from selling it to someone else. And, I still plan on buying a DJ 41 from him. Thoughts?

I appreciate your input.

Sounds very reasonable to me. Would start higher 9.5-10k - a polish doesn’t cost much.

That’s pretty much what I was offered recently for my daily wear September 2020 Explorer that definitely would need a light polish.

Ok, thanks. I appreciate it. I know he has to make money out of the deal so I wanted to be mindful of that as well.

Definitely worth finding out what the trade value is but let him throw out the first number!

I’d go Sub Date, but I’m biased as it’s my favorite reference

Try getting a few quotes from reputable resellers if doable. Then bring to your AD and say your willing to go slightly under if they can deliver a new Sub Date. Should be a win win for everyone

This is going to be a bit unorthodox, but sell it to him for the retail price at the time AFTER he makes an offer for your watch. It may cost you now, but watch that AD help you out in the future for any hot references that you might want at retail.

Are you able to keep the Explorer and add the Sub? I also own the Explorer, and besides it being a great watch, it is discontinued and only had a run of 5 years. It has timeless styling and imo a much better size at 39mm than the current 36mm iteration.

I can definitely see it increasing in price as supply dries up.

Hi, yes, I can keep the Explorer and add the Sub Date. I love the Explorer but have to admit sometimes I find myself missing a date function. Silly as I could just as easily look at the computer or the cellphone. I tend to agree with you that more than likely the price will go up as with everything that is no longer being produced at least in 39 mm.

I appreciate everyone's comments and advice.

In the long run it’s worth showing your AD some decent goodwill. If you can show him a decent turn on the explorer and he gets you into a sub date then that sounds great to me . Sounds like a win win for everyone

Great idea. Agree with mutual understanding if you give AD good price then maybe build report. Just depends what your priorities are....extra few grand or chance at other models.

That 39mm Explorer is absolutely perfect. I wouldn’t part with it and think it makes a great pair with a Sub Date. You can always get a Sub but that 39 Explorer is gone. Won’t be able to replace and I’m sure you’ll end up regretting it.

I tend to agree with you. Especially after being told by a gray dealer what they value my watch at. Ha ha. Good thing I don't need to part with it. Thanks again.

I agree 100% with you on this point. I would NEVER sell/trade my Explorer for all the reasons mentioned by others...very limited production run (especially MK2) prior to being discontinued, and the fact that I always wanted it in 39 mm and was never attracted to it in 36 mm.

I’m in a similar position. The Explorer 39 is the only Rolex I’ve had from new. And once it’s gone, I know I’ll never get this one back. Too much potential regret for me.

No do not part with the explorer. The 39mm is perfect and gone forever. Subs will be around until the end of time.

I have both the explorer 39 (mk2) and the black submariner date (41). They make a more perfect pair than you might think. I don’t always want the date, and the explorer is perfect for that. The only thing I feel like I am still missing is a bit of color (hope to add another eventually). I echo that if you can swing it, don’t give up the explorer.

I too have the same pairing (39 Exp + 41 Sub-date) and find they coexist quite nicely as they have a different feel. For summer color I go to my lovely green Hulk. Cheers!

I also have a 39mm Explorer and I've it, but I think you are unlikely to get $9200 from a dealer unless they are working something into the Sub price...but I don't see that being the case if it is new from an AD.

I could be wrong. I do hope you follow up here and let us know how it goes.

This is what I have done with my AD several times. Good approach and everyone wins.

Since you asked for opinions:
Don't part with the explorer 39, if it is the mk 2 it is the best watch Rolex ever made.
