SO Close . . . suggestions re: GMT v Sub

I'm so close to pulling the trigger on my first Rolex. Want to be smart about my "first".

Really like the looks of the GMT and the Submariner and have a hard time telling the difference between the two. I imagine they are glaring and I'm just missing it. Any suggestions/strong advocates one way or another?

In the stainless steel models is there much difference between how they hold their value?

Thanks all,

Randy

Are we comparing the Sub to the IIC or the original II?

THey'll hold their values about the same (GMT IIc and the Sub Date).

You really can't go wrong with either one, although I do like the update bracelet on the GMT and the supercase. Although I would brush out the center links.

Since you're torn on the aesthetics of the watches, we'll have to lobby for utility as the tie-breaker. Which function will you use more? The 300m/1000ft. water resistance of the Sub. vs. the 100m/300 ft. water resistance of the GMT is largely irrelevant, even for diving (yes, I've taken my Sub. diving). So what's left is the bezel function. Would you use the elapsed time bezel on the Sub. for anything? Diving, cooking, timing runs, etc., or would you use the multi-time zone tracking capability of a GMT? I think that to purchase a watch for it's resale is the wrong reason, get it because you WANT it. That being said, they both ought to maintain their value well.

I prefer the Sub to the GMT (owner of both). To me GMT is too busy, too many numbers on the bezel, and an extra hand that I dont use.
Valuewise: typically watches with more complications are more valuable, such as Pateks with complications appreciate a great deal. However, Rolex Sub is superb watch and will keep its value, especially if you buy pre-owned.

If you want to be "really smart" about your first Rolex purchase, then you should get the one that you want to put on your wrist every morning for the rest of your life..

Don't listen to what a bunch of biased Forum junkies say.......

Both references have their champions. Buy the one that hits your chords.

I have both, so in my mind it's a tie. The extra hand on the GMT I use when I travel, the Sub, when I dive. At work, either one.
You might be able to get the Sub at a nice discount, and it might be harder to get a new GMTc at a discount.

Or, do what I did and get both!!
