I've posted this question elsewhere on the internet in an effort to collect as many different points as possible before making my final choice.

Seems lots of members here travel quite a bit and I'd like to know how you carry your cameras on your adventures.

I've been looking for a small backpack style that will cradle my DSLR but can also be useful as a backpack. Looking to hold a sweatshirt, water bottle, snacks etc.
I'll only carry the 1 camera and possibly 1 extra lens.
I've looked at the Lowepro backpacks on their website but most seem to be made for many cameras/lenses and less cargo capacity for typical backpack stuff. I also don't want a big backpack that will look out of place.
I will be taking my camera on any trips I may go on, taking it for rides on my motorcycle and maybe even out on my bicycle.

Is there anyone here that takes their DSLR out with them everywhere they go and if so, how do you carry it safely?

I have the Kata R-103, which is a dedicated camera bag for me. It may be a little bigger than what you are looking for, but it will carry everything you need.

Great setup, excellent camera and some lenses to lust!!
I've got a "humble" Nikon D90, with 18-105 VR, 70-300 VRII and 35mm f1.8...
My bag is a Tenba Sling bag which barely carries all my stuff. I need to change it as soon as possible...

This is the back-pack bag I have with me right now in Maui. It is the one made by Canon for cameras and is the same size as a typical Jansport bookbag although it is padded and partitioned...

It holds the 5D, with the 70-200mm shown attached, and has room for another lens on the side, with the other side available for flash, filters, hoods, etc. There is still room left ofer for a small lunch.

The outside has a zippered layer where a jacket would fit, pockets and attaching straps on the sides where the tripod can be strapped, cell phone stored..etc...

Did I mention that my backpack also has a side pocket to hold a slim laptop? I can actually fit my 15.4" MacBook Pro in it, but I usually just put my manuals or filters.

I actually went through a few Billinghams and I really like those bags, but I just have too much gear and found the backpack works better for me than the shoulder bag design.

I've got the Lowepro Fastpack 250. While it's got the capacity in the top section to take light daygear, I use that section to carry my 5D and 24-70, while the 50D with the 70-200 goes in the padded section, along with the flash and a couple of extra lenses:

An easy addition of a strap changes the water bottle pocket into a tripod holder:

Finally, there's a pocket for a 15" laptop or some books:

pelican 1510, i personally like hardcases since it has a handle and wheels its pretty easy to lug around, also it doubles as a seat or a stand if i need it. Easy to ship or travel with as its TSA approved for overhead storage, and yes i take this with me if i plan to travel and i want to take photos.

I use a Tamrac 5575 for my D90, D70 and my three lenses and accessories. This has been up Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park and on a sailboat in the USVI.

The problem with camera bags is you're never done buying them...

hey the dude I have the same lowepro TLZ-1 for my new canon eos 50d and can take my kit lens with it in there. Recently I purchased a 85-300mm lens and is too big for the pack so now I need a backpack and with that space will come more lenses(AGGGGGH$$$$$$$). any reccomendations for where to get a nice bag ?

I second your recommendation for Domke. I love my briefcase bag from Domke. It's a little smaller than yours, and black, but it's also under the radar, as it does not look at all like a camera bag.

Domke makes great stuff, for sure.

That Kata that Vu showed us in post #2 is very nice. It can be purchased with or without a laptop sleeve.

Kata is an Israeli company that started out making bulletproof vests, etc... Their gear is imported by Bogen USA. The quality is pretty unmatched as are the materials and feature innovation.

That big Kata backback I have has a reversible cover - one side is for rain protection... the other reflects the sun to keep the temperature of the gear down in the hot sun. Things like that really differentiate their offerings.

Sling packs are really nice if you don't want a traditional backpack. They're becoming more popular and should provide the kind of space you're looking for.
