IMO the build quality on the previous generation has gone straight to the toilet......the current one and their relatively new line of cars have a very good build quality.....However, i just really prefer BMW, i'll get a MB when i'm 50+, BMW is a driver's car....better engine, better feedback from the car, better handling and outstanding build quality, my problem with MB is that the previous generation used to share parts with a Chrysler and MB has just gone AWOL, the make an R-class, A-class, B-class, CLC-class, Minivan....they are trying to target too many niches, sacrificed quaility and all the Cars look almost the same, BMW------all the way!

i have as a chauffuer , driven over several hundred thousand miles in mb's , never let down. only cars to let me down bmw.

I've only test-driven BMWs. Then, after test-driving the Mercedes, I bought MB. Each time. For luxury, comfort (and, I think, a better driver's car with the new C, E & S Classes) I choose Mercedes. Every day, and twice on sunday.

That's my wife's ride. For me, anything made in Stuttgart will do.

Luxury cars in Dallas are very common as well and I must say that Vancouver is on the same level if not more. My wife and I were counting the BMWs as we were driving through downtown Van and it was almost every third car. I wish I was driving my BMW up here because it would be so fun.

If you look simply at raw data for the last handful or so years, BMW has been much better in terms of quality than MB.

There have been far fewer defects per new car, far fewer repairs, and higher customer satisfaction. This is all something you can research for yourselves at JD Power.


I'm biased, but I like BMW. My 5 series is 4 years old and has never had a problem. It's a fantastic car and BMW has been a great company to deal with.


The 5 series holds its value much better than other cars in its class. It also recently ranked the highest in appeal in the segment (5 series #1, E class #2, A6 #3). The 5 also generally wins most European "executive saloon" tests.

My first thought on this post is it is completely meaningless to compare the two in generalities. Anytime someone asks a "Which is better" question it leads to everyones opinions with very little facts and lot's of generalizations.

Bottom line, mostly pointless. Even if you were to be specific and ask which similar model in a class would you choose tends to be very subjective. Pick the one you like because YOU drove them both, compared features, serviceability, warranties, cost of ownership, etc. and then buy the one YOU like.

After spending 23 years in the automotive industry, they both have lot's of pluses and a few minuses. Do your research and enjoy. I have owned both brands, enjoyed and hated them at one point or another while in my garage.

If your going to offer up an opinion, I believe it is useful to give facts to back it up. Lends to the credibility of the opinion.

Any AMG will drop significantly once off the lot. LOW low mileage SL55's are going for under $30K at auctions! Partly due to the new SL63's arrival... but still, talk about depreciation...they went for $125K+ new!

Though I drive a Land Rover, my gf's beamer ( 330 ) is quite impressive compared to my fathers MB! But they are both great cars though!

I drive BMW's cuz I haven't reached MB's demographic age yet. ( 10 years older than BMW)
