How many Day Date winding turns?
Happy Father's Day 2022!
I received my Day-Date from an NYC AD last month but did not wear it until yesterday. The manual says to turn 25 times. What exactly is a turn? A complete revolution of the 5-stars? Well, I did not exactly do that and turned it 20 times, it started moving after 10 turns. Then, I walked around Central Park for 6 miles and after a total of 8 hours. rested it on its crown for 12 hours. It stopped at 11:45 AM when I picked it up at noon. Is this strange? With the initial wind, perhaps 10-15 full turns, and all that walking, shouldn't it be still running after 12 hours of rest? Thanks for your advice. |

No, it's not strange at all.
It takes over 40 full turns of the crown to wind most Rolex movements. 20 turns will give it power, and it is assumed that you would wear it for long enough to wind it further, or keep it wound. Walking around for a few hours is unlikely to do much more than maintain that minimal state of wind; it is activity that winds it, not just sitting on your wrist. Your watch did what any watch would do with insufficient power reserve, it wound down and stopped.

A 32xx caliber needs 35-40 full (360 degrees) windings. Measurements you find here:

It's okay, Kathleen . . . as long as he's not the one at the RSC working on my TT DJ 16013.

Wonder why Patek's manual for my 5066 says to wind 10 times only from a dead start. Three turns and it starts to tick.

They think that asking anything more than the bare minimum from a watch owner is dangerous for fear that they might get confused and frisbee the watch across the street. Automatic watches are designed to keep themselves wound, not to wind themselves up. The overwhelming majority of people are too sedentary for the latter. |

saxo3 MoStuff Better results this afternoon. Wore day-date for a good 8.5 hours, out for Father's Days fun, sushi, walking with more pace and arm movement. Rest watch with crown up at 8:30 pm. 16.5 hours later around 1 pm, still ticking. Also, noticed it's about -1.5 seconds slow. Remembered a month ago, that it was about -2 to -3 seconds a day. Is there a break-in period? |

How many Day Date winding turns?
Your Datejust Ref. 16013 is equipped with a Rolex 3035 caliber, which has a minimum power reserve of 44 hours.
The timekeeping depends on the physical position of the watch, i.e. your wearing habits, its position at rest overnight, temperature, and many other parameters. I recommend you fully wind the 3035 caliber, wear the watch as usual, and test different rest positions overnight. Either a timegrapher or a smartphone timing app is very useful to get a good idea about the characteristics of your watch movement. |

How many Day Date winding turns?
What are the reference numbers of both watches?
You said (post #8) that you have a Rolex 16013, which is a Datejust (not a Day Date), right? It has the 'old' and very good 3035 caliber. The new Datejust of your son is either equipped with a caliber 2236 (Datejust 31) or a caliber 3235 (Datejust 36 and Datejust 41). Accuracy is not a matter of purchase date but how the novement is regulated by a watchmaker, how the watch is worn and positioned overnight by the owner, temperature, ... In other words, the calibers 3035, 2236, 3235 can be equally accurate. |

No matter the movement or the brand its only as good as what its been regulated to that matches the owners wearing habits. But all the Rolex movements made over the past 50 odd years should run to, or inside the COSC spec for Swiss chronometers, which is a Average of -4+6 seconds day or better out of 86400 second in a day..

Different question.
Is there a way to set the 5 stars Rolex symbol on the crown to point in one direction when screwed tight? |
