Dating a Tudor
What are the tricks and resources available for telling how old a Tudor watch is? I'm looking at a nice pre-owned Oyster, but I don't know what year it is and don't know how to find out.

Not easy Greg, if you know the model number and serial number it can be narrowed down slightly but that's about it mate. Tell us more please....

Hi,
It's quite a smart-looking Oyster Prince I'm watching on eBay. Says "CRS 7964" in the case back. Plus some watchmaker's servicing marks. Looks very clean. No other numbers or identifying marks. |

That's a shame. Where would the serial be? On the movement somewhere? This one has a Tudor-branded plate with no serial on it, but it could be masking a serial inside the mechanism somewhere? Seems odd though. I'd expect it to be on the plate.

Very nice! The one I'm looking at is a more simple movement, no date - stainless steel with a black dial - I'll ask the person about the serial as the photos don't show it.

The ser# reference thingy does not work for Tudors. First, Tudors were introduced in 1945 and used the Rose emblem. In the late 60's early 70's, it was converted to the current Shield logo. Generally, a Tudor w/a B ser# is from 1992 and newer. Hope this helps a little.
Aging a Tudor is not a sceince like the pure bred Rollies. SteveM....your thoughts??? Sincerely, Stan. |

Thanks Stan. This one has a rose on the dial, so that's interesting. Of course, it could be a redial, but I don't think so, cos it's in very good condition but not mint.

It ended and I missed it! Curiously low price:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MEWA:IT&ih=002 Edit: realised it was withdrawn, hence no bidding. Thought I was cracking up when it appeared as "ended"! |

I have been researching on the tudor serial nos and year of issue for some time and have published it in the HK watch forum. Here is my finding though not very comprehensive and with some assumptions due to its very limited information.
Year Least S/N 1960 28xxxx 1961 34xxxx 1962 36xxxx 1963 39xxxx 1964 43xxxx 1965 50xxxx 1966 56xxxx 1967 59xxxx 1968 62xxxx 1969 68xxxx 1970 74xxxx 1971 75xxxx 1972 77xxxx 1973 (*) 79xxxx 1974 (*) 81xxxx 1975 (*) 83xxxx 1976 (*) 84xxxx 1977 86xxxx 1978 (*) 88xxxx 1979 (*) 90xxxx 1980 (*) 93xxxx 1981 (*) 95xxxx 1982 97xxxx 1983 (*) 99xxxx 1984 29xxx 1985 14xxxx 1986 17xxxx 1987 (*) 19xxxx 1988 21xxxx 1989 26xxxx 1990 B33xxxx 1991 (*) B36xxxx 1992 B39xxxx 1993 B50xxxx 1994 B58xxxx 1995 B59xxxx 1996 B79xxxx 1997 B85xxxx 1998 B99xxxx 1999 H13xxxx Remarks : * is the estimated S/N due to limited info |

I recently purchased a Tudor Date, and I heard that unlike Rolex, Tudor only has the codes, not the actual year of manufacture on the watch. Is this true?

Rolex has codes as well. The year of manufacture is not on the watch itself

Whoops, I mistyped, I meant codes on the papers, is this common for the year not to be on the papers?
