Ed White for me. I just think the speedmaster has a cooler history and I like the traditional look of it and size. Also, screw down pushers drive me nuts.

Between those two clearly the 321.
That said, a 321 only makes sense to me if you already have a vintage and a modern Speedy in your collection. The 321 is beautiful, but also an atypical Speedy and as a Omega and Speedy fan I think they got too much wrong with it and effectively are wasting the wonderful recreation of the 321 movement. Again, it’s pretty and if you don’t care too much about Speedy history and details or just like it the way it is no matter you’re good to go.
Daytonas are a hard pass for me in general. Busy and impractical. A piece of jewelry to go with the murse if you ask me.
All kidding aside, the Speedmaster in general is one of the most important watches ever made for obvious reasons, super reliable and practical for day to day use while it can pass for a dress-y kind of watch in a formal setting. If I could only have one watch it would be a modest 1861 or 80s 861 in good shape.

While it’s a no (always) for any Daytona for me, I took issue with some of the neo-vintage details on the 321. I was on the list and for a call, but passed. Bought a modest 1861 instead. I was excited about the movement, but don’t like the idea of a pre-moon replica that isn’t even “correct” in most ways. Had it been in a standard Speedy case and with hesalite and non-stepped, printed logo dial, I would’ve bought it.
That said, the 321 is a clear winner over the overrated and illegible Daytona.

All joking aside, on my Speedies I can read the time at any angle and any light condition - even without my glasses. My Sea Dweller requires at least some squinting and angling. A Daytona is basically useless to tell time.

Its a real problem on the 8,9, 10 minutes, then 18,19,21, 22. For me 13k+ on a watch that cannot be read accurately is a non starter. The function of a watch is to tell the time, and 13k and it cannot. I could not reconcile that and off it went.

I felt it's simply pretty jewelry, took it off and gave it to my wife that evening. That never, flat out never happened with my Speedy, ever.

It's clear, the Omega is trying to be a Rolex. But is doesn't even get close

That make the decision a no brainer.

I prefer the Omega between these two. IMHO, manual wind brings the watch experience to another higher level...add the fact the historical accomplishments of the 321...how can you not pick the Ed White over a modern Daytona....

the speedy is closer to its original form than the modern Daytona.

the only connection I see to what you are saying is the increased price?

the speedy is using a lemania based 321 movement that hasn't been used for decades and has been desired by speedy enthusiasts for much of that time...

omega gave their customers what they wanted and set a new price for that customer satisfaction. seems fair to me.

Can’t even tell the time on the Daytona, dial is too busy and ugly. Only thing it has over the speedy is WR

Despite the detractors, the poll is leaning in favor of the Daytona. :ciao:

That’s because it’s posted in the Rolex forum

I’m actually surprised the Omega is doing as well as it is.

Maybe one day when the speedy has ties to the wishbone family it will be competitive with everyone Daytona. Until then…

I have a 116500 and if given the choice I think I would pick the 321. It looks fantastic. My only concern would be it’s practicality as a daily….. they are just so rare that you don’t get the quantity of reviews the Daytona gets.

Interesting. I thought the Omega would poll a lot lower on TRF.

Such a great speedy.

Collectability and brand loyalty aside, the 321 by a country mile...and this from someone who's owned both.

Save for the size and an old caliber, the 321 is the same as all the various Speedmasters: banal, old and with the squinting subdials.
Do you see I'm a Rolex fan?
I'm go with my Daytona Reverse Panda.
Pandas have spots. Those are doughnuts.

I agree, the current white dialed Daytona is not a “panda.” Using that same logic the current black dialed Daytona would be called a “reverse panda” … which it is not.

Having said that, both versions of the current Daytona are absolutely stunning in their own design.
