Icon5 Is this a good trade?

Someone wants to trade me their Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean for my Rolex Date 15000. They’re willing to throw in some cash too.

I have Several other Rolexes in my collection with a no date submariner as my daily so I’m not all too familiar with Omegas because i own none. This would be a nice segway into owning one.

Thoughts, opinions?

“Some cash” is quite vague. Seems it would be hard to say if it’s a good deal or not.

From a 2 sec Google search your Rolex goes for ~$3-4k while the omega for ~$4-5k. So if I looked at the right models, depending on conditions/service history/dial, this may be a fair trade trending toward being better for you than for him.

Last count there’s 2318 variants of the PO going back over a decade.

So my standard answer is absolutely wear it well congratulations buy whatever you like.

I think the only thought is do you want to do it or not?

I do want to make the trade. It does seem fair.

I agree, i was kind of stunned when he proposed the trade. I asked him why not sell the Omega and buy a more “robust” Rolex model and he said it was too much of a hassle to sell and buy; easier to trade which i understand.

I can understand that logic. Ultimately I think a Coaxial Omega is "more" than a Rolex Date, but hey, if that is what he wants. Since you have many other Rolex this appears to be a good/fair trade on your end.

Then I would do that trade and confirm you’re getting a genuine PO because there’s some really crazy fuguzzis around and the owner is losing a couple grand if not more depending on the cash included.

Well he’s driving 1.5hrs to meet me. So if he wants to waste the gas to try and trade a fake PO and i catch it; Its unfortunate for him :p

It comes with box and papers so I’m going to thoroughly vet the watch.

I thought this was somebody who you already knew. I would ask for better pictures and run them by the omega forum.

Given that this appears to be a trade advantageous to you and apparently you don’t know the seller, I would be extra cautious.

This!

It sounds a bit too good to be true. Even a straight swap would still be advantageous to the OP.

I personally wouldn't offer such trade even if I was desperate for a 15000 and had acquired the Omega at no cost.

Exactly my thoughts, because I’ve mauled this over and i can’t see why anyone would make such a trade.

I’m going to ask for more detailed pictures of the dial and movement and post on Omega and see what actual owners have to say.

Nope, i posted my watch up for sale as I’m trimming down my collection and he offered to trade. I don’t know anything about Omega but i could tell it didn’t make any sense just based on current market value of both watches. Unless he he’s willing to seriously downgrade just to own a Rolex which is insane

I’m sure it’s fine. Sometimes people get frustrated selling especially when poors want to upgrade , so their time might be worth more than the $2k they’re giving up. Besides, it’ll be a good follow up thread if it’s not kosher.

(Entertain us dammit! Do the deal)

I’ll definitely update the thread on Tuesday after i meet up with him. Some posters in Omega are saying they have no reason to believe the watch is not legit based on more pics i sent. So we’ll see.

With the new income reporting of sales above $600, the fact that a Rolex holds its value better than Omega on average and there are far more lenders willing to loan out a higher percentage of a watches value knowing that the Rolex market is far stronger than the Omega market in the long run. Doesnt seem too far fetched to me.

At $6,100 MSRP he likely got it at a discount and has worn it, plus without a bracelet im sure omega charges close to $300 for a new strap. So alot of factors would probably have me keep my Rolex than trade out for a slightly more expensive omega.

Omega updates are far less subtle as well. Your 15000 is what, 20-30years old and still worth as much if not more than it was new? A quick look at value retention on 20-30yr old omegas probably would clue me into why this gent wants to make the trade.. Most pawnbrokers won't give more than 50% on an omega but I know plenty that will pay damn near ebay sale prices on used rolexes. They're just 2 different resale markets, Omegas are a tougher sell at the end of the day, and he likely wouldn't do much better than this trade all things considered.

I sent pictures of the movement to the Omega thread and they said it’s an authentic watch!

I’m meeting up with buddy at a Rolex AD who also sells Omegas to get things checked out, but damn This is crazy. I feel Like I’m figuratively robbing buddy with this trade cause that 15000 was a super cheap buy for me originally. Guess Rolex gonna Rolex.
