16520 Daytona winding issue

I just bought a 16520. I found that the watch does not respond to hand winding through the crown but it seems shaking or wearing the watch could make the watch move. Does that mean my watch is simply due for oiling?or that is some mechanic problem?

I just worry I may need to pay much to repair this "new" watch. I couldnt find the seller as they are closed for the weekend. Just eager to know what is happening.

Thanks very much in advance.

If it’s not winding manually, It means you need to get it serviced/repaired. Not much more to it, aside from bringing it in and see what the watchmaker/AD says.

Good luck!

Depends on how you are winding it as to wind you must turn the crown clockwise only, and would need at least 60 full crown turns to fully wind.

Thanks. I think I winded around thirty clockwise turn. It was not responding. My other Rolex does have some delay to start ticking after my mannual winding, but eventually they did move. For this 16520, it seems it only respond movement to the watch, but not mannual winding by the crown. Seems strange to me

Even after a manual wind some might need a slight shake or swirl to start all normal no matter the Rolex movement.

If it starts moving after 20-30 winds and keeps running for predicted time (power reserve) you are fine. Otherwise, it needs service.

Simply winding the crown does not always "start" a watch, it is not an electrical switch.

A watch has over 100 interconnected parts that all must begin moving and often they are simply not in the right location to smoothly move.

In a perfect world a few turns would start everything up. In the real world we sometimes need to tap the case or give it a small shake to unlock all the parts.

Wind it 40 times. If it’s not moving, shake the watch a few times. Not too hard. Just a little. If it starts running you’re ok.

First, you cant over wind this movement.
Second, the 4130 movement with its larger mainspring will need at least 60 full winds to fully wind the watch. Keep in mind you cant over wind it anyway so 80 winds is not excessive and optimum accuracy and performance is always at the top half of the mainspring so its advantageous to always wind the movement fully if you are winding it. Your movements will keep its power reserve fully topped off.
If the second hand doesn't come to life say after 40 winds, just tap the watch case to release the gears and the movement will come alive.

Think it’s the 4030 in this case. Does that movement exhibit the same behaviour where it needs a jolt to start it? I do find Rolex unique in this respect. None of my other wAtches do this.

Same thing happened with my OP41 and had to send it to Rolex twice. It was fixed the second time and is running much better now.

Don’t shake it, it’s not going to help anything. Just get it back to your AD/Rolex servicing

The 4030 is not a Rolex movement, it is a Zenith movement, although it has been tuned to different specs.

All mechanical watches exhibit torque-lock from time to time, it is the nature of mechanics.

Yeah that’s why I was wondering if the 4030 exhibited this.

Literally none of my other watches, 8500, 1863, 321, nomos eta, seiko, 324sc show Rolex level of torque lock. Like three turns of manual wind and they kick off but with Rolex I need like twenty whether it be 32xx or the 4130.

Your experience isn’t rare OP. Some start after manual wind, some don’t. To complicate matters, a watch that always started will cease to, and vice versa…

I am trying on this new old watch for the second day. Here is my finding

- the watch does not respond to hand winding. Even if I shake it after winding like 60us turns.
- when I wear the watch on hand, the watch tends to start ticking rather soon.
- however, after I carry on wearing a whole morning, it seems the watch runs a but slow. I think the watch stopped some some intervals.

I am have made an appointment with the shop tomorrow, they promise to look into this for me. They believe the watch may need service.

Do you feel tension when you wind, if so, then you'll need a full teardown service for sure.

If there is no tension then slightly give it a full twist counter clockwise to engage the winding mechanism then start winding it clockwise. If that's the problem then you don't need a full tear down service generally but just some lubrication on the winding mechanism (atleast you'll know the problem)
