Have you not seen the videos recently of people getting robbed.

They're not exaggerated anything, they're surveillance videos of the crimes. It'll make you sick.

digital camouflage for your watch.
a holographic image that visuallly presents the watch as a timex to anyone who is not wearing the holographic transmitter.

unfortunately your concerns are warranted and the solutions are not available.

If you have to worry about wearing a watch when you go somewhere, do yourself a favor and don't buy an expensive watch. I wear any watch I own, anywhere. They are insured and if something happens, so be it. I will not live my life like that and if I were to worry that much about it, I wouldn't buy watches.

Use situational awareness and common sense.

I’m pretty sure there are rough parts of just about any city where you wouldn’t wear expensive things or drive through in an expensive car etc.

Situational awareness and common sense would = do not buy a Rolex.

Common sense prevails.

Harder in summer. But I've been out in London and just made sure my watch I'd beneath my sleeve.

I wouldn't wear it to say a festival as I'm lucky to drink too much.
But a restaurant I wouldn't hesitate.
Situation dictates.

I don't have a solution to propose, but I find OP your thought process fascinating. It is indeed ironic that people can no longer travel with their GMT, which is designed for travel.

Also from what I can see, it's not thefts that people have to guard against for their watch, it's robberies. What kind of device can you think of that can prevent the criminals from forcefully removing a watch from someone's wrist? What about the situation where victims are forced to hand over their watch at gunpoint or knifepoint?

I live in India and regularly wear my Rolex watches. No issues whatsoever. India has stores selling Rolex watches in all major cities. Currently in Sydney on vacation but decided not to bring my Rolex as I am not comfortable removing it while going through security checks at the airport.

Hardly.

Just insure it, don't flaunt it, and you should be okay to enjoy what you wear anywhere in the world.

I’ve kept my watches on me when going through the security checkpoints. I think the watches don’t set off the metal detectors… unless the AD has sold me a fancy fake..

None of the airports make you remove the watch.

tbh i don't even wear a watch to tell time. most definitely don't wear a gmt for travelling purposes. if I don't feel safe I won't wear any expensive watches, simple.

I think it matters more the neighbourhood not the city. Also the time of day. Walking through a downtown alley at night vs Main Street in broad day light. The details matter as per usual.

I've traveled to both NYC and London with my Rolex and somehow managed to avoid getting robbed. I've worn it here at home, at work, at the gym and again survived.

I agree with @V25V.

No one cares a rat arse about any watch in India.

Same here! I’m quite amazed at the OPs generalisation, but then again.., maybe I’m just being overly sensitive given we’ve surpassed the UK’s economy and comparisons with Iraq are quite, IMHO, unmerited :)

I don't think an "anti-theft" bracelet would do much. Nowadays everyone knows what (insert any brand) are, especially brands constantly mentioned in pop culture. If the thief wants it, they'll force it off your hands one way or another. Whatever anti-theft system is there will only slow them down.

The best method is to be fully aware of your surrounding. If you don't feel safe don't wear it, if you have to think about it twice don't wear it.

More developed country means more money means more luxury watches on people’s wrists. Add to that people’s naivety due to having grown up in a developed country, and it’s a thief’s paradise I’m sure

I think it may have to do with how people travel and class division. In Hong Kong, I think most people, even if you're well off, will take public transportation. There are enough folks who has money to have a Rolex collection that takes the subway to commute. In places like California, only the poor takes the subway or the bus, unless you live in a dense urban area, even then I think many of those folks choose to take an Uber/Lyft rather than public transport. So I think you have a situation where Rolex are common sightings in HK and probably most of Asia, and it isn't in places like California and most of US.

I didn't know the only purpose of a GMT was for traveling. Guess I'll throw mine away.
