16710 with all the insert changes is a no brainer IMPO

It’s one of the best modern Rolex references ever made. With the ability to swap bracelets and inserts it’s extremely versatile.

Great shot! Agree. LV is a standout, but a 5-digit GMT is my favorite.

If you can’t get both, I’d go for the GMT.

Here's my case for the 16710 after owning both a 16610 and a 16170. I currently only have the 16710 in my collection.

1: The 120 click bezel on the older 16710 makes all the difference. Because of that, you can use the bezel to time minutes the same way you would with the 16610. Just make the adjustments for the hourly bezel markings rather than the minute track. Effectively it's the same thing with the dots being 2.5-minute increments, colors change at 15 and 45 minutes - easy.

2: Due to the 120 click bezel, you can also line up the bezel to the GMT hand and have an easy to read elapsed hour counter. That is not something you can do as easily on the Sub. It's also very practical to have this as an option. I've used it before for things like time elapsed between doses of medicine when my kids are sick. May sound silly but trust me, when they wake up in the middle of the night with a fever you can quickly check when they had some medicine last without thinking.

3: The bezel is bi-directional. So if you overshoot the hand you want to time, or you want to line up with a hand thats between 12-6, you dont have to go all around the bezel. Same with needing to time small increments back to back. All you need to do is rotate clockwise and you're set.

4: Then the obvious; it's a dual time watch. So you have the added option to actually tracking an additional timezone. But as stated in the first 2 points, the bezel can be used for much more than that.

Downside right now is that they're expensive at the moment and you're going to pay a premium for a really nice example. But I personally think the GMTs are more usefully for everyday life if you don't work as a diver.

Go somewhere and try both on,you won’t go wrong with either watch,so it comes down to what you want to see on your wrist everyday

You can go GMT... But it will never be a Sub.

Love the LV, but agree that the 5 digit GMT is one of my favorite references.

Add the jubilee bracelet, and you have 6 different looks in one watch.

I would say that the GMT is better for daily life (second time zone and thinner/lighter) but since you are looking into preowned 5digit ones, be aware that the 16700/16710 (all colors) is currently much more expensive than the black 16610LN. (the green 16610LV is a different story). So your budget may also be a deciding factor.

I know this thread is old, but is that a Sub Glidelock bracelet on your 16710? TIA

Since you're limiting it to the black bezel GMT, I would pick the 16610.

Seems to be a leaning to the GMT - you go back 5 ish years and the Sub would win hands down - how times and taste change - which is a lesson

16710 is far more useful since you aren’t diving but I would also consider the awesome 16570 and 16600

EDIT - I didn't notice this was a two year old thread.

16710!

It does everything the sub does unless you want to dive deeper than 100 meters. For me, having GMT available at a glance is very useful for flight planning and logging my ham radio (K4DRD) contacts. Also, with a choice of bezel inserts and bracelets, it's arguably one of the most versatile Rolex references.

It's weird being the same age as old people.
