It’s tough. Best advice I give myself is to not gain the weight in the first place. Losing a bunch of weight is depressing and puts your body under significant stress.

Not only that, but the cravings for carbs and garbage food when drinking and also the morning after. It's becoming just about impossible to drink and stay in shape after 50. If not for college football, I'd be on the wagon permanently.

I didn’t realize that, interesting.

I guess I always figured eating sweets did the same thing, which now that I think of it, many alcohol beverages are

It’s funny but this thread points to how there is no one single approach that works for everyone. I’m 6’2 and weigh 170 lbs. most would consider me “skinny”, I prefer to think of it as svelte , however I do enjoy my libations, pasta and sweets. My trick, might be good genetics, but IMHO it’s discipline… I don’t overindulge.

That said, this thread has covered a myriad of weight loss approaches and it seems to me, that what works for some doesn’t work for others.

Anyway, to me it all boils down to moderation in what you consume.

Personally, I think you are absolutely right.

You can do whatever you want. Eat whatever you want. Just not too much of it.

We tend to say…”boy this is great, let’s do more of it”.

But doing it in moderation will keep most issues in check. I’m not good at moderation. But I’m working on it.

I hear you brother.

My "problem" has always been sweets. I tried going cold turkey and giving them up entirely many years ago. It was SO tough, and what I found was that I just craved in other ways (usually carbs or bourbon ).

I realize now that I can't deny myself some indulgences ... I just have to keep them in check.

Echoing what others say about it being a lifestyle, not a crash course.

I was also fit from my teens into mid 20’s. Really focused on weight lifting and strength (body building style)

Life priorities change, knees start to hurt, and next thing you know I go from 225lbs with an 8 pack to 250+ and a gut.

Last year at this time I decided to make a change and get back in shape but in a more long term, sustainable way, that won’t get me injured or burnt out. Lifestyle change.

Cut out all alcohol, sweets, pizza, etc. Lift weights 6x a week. Cardio 6x a week at 30 min at brisk walk on incline. Have 4-5 meals a day, always high protein. No food after 7pm. Not measured food but I try and practice some portion control.

1 year later and I’m Down approx 30 lbs to 220lbs, have top 4 abs showing. I’m much less muscular than I used to be and my strength is down a bit, but my heart feels calmer and my joints don’t ache anymore. I feel at my best.

I allow myself 2-3 drinks once a week but I usually go a month without alcohol as I kind of lost the desire to drink. I still don’t have any deserts except for the family birthday occasions. I found some frozen yogurt 80 cal bars that I will go to if I find I’m losing my mind. Those hit the spot and I don’t feel guilty.

Overall I’m happy with where i am and want to just slowly recomp a bit more. I could lose more weight but then I’d be too small and weak, so it’s slow and steady for me.
I vowed to never let myself go again.

I have friends who went on crash course keto diets and such and it worked but a few months later they are back to where they started. Not saying it’s not good, but for some people it’s not a realistic life style and they can’t last and revert. I found this works for me. The hard part is finding something that works for you as an individual that you can do day in and day out for years and years. Consistency is everything.

Congratulations Gladiator because I can only imagine the efforts and sacrifices involved. Granted, most say it’s simply lifestyle changes but from experience, it’s easier said than done.
Personally, what gave me the morale boost is using the 5 seconds rule. On days when I lack the urge, it pushed me to action and I’m glad I’m here.

Is that right?

Novel concept. I’ll look into it.

What they never mention in the tabloid is breaking up from a relationship. With that said. A couple of weeks ago I tested not to eat for 5 days. It was a test to see if I could do it. More a mental and character test than anything else. Just drank mineral water, water with some salt in and a couple of espressos a day. I quickly lost a few kilos. Fasting a day every few weeks since then. Eating carnivore diet more or less strictly and exercise regularly.

At least a slightly strict diet (cut some calories) and exercise (running) does the trick for me.

Harsh truth.

I like to eat and exercising has served me well in keeping matters in check. Thankfully, I love cycling, paddling, and hiking in the mountains. I also like to play chess but that didn't do the trick...

Working in banking through my 30s I had picked up 30 pounds as a result of no time for exercise combined with daily airline and/or cafeteria food, quite an unhealthy way of life all around. With more time and exercise those pounds were gone in no time and for most of my 40s I was as fit as at 25. Ten years later I have kept my weight but time has slowly started to take its toll. No more personal records on the bike or in the mountains.
