2008 sub
I am looking at buying a 2008 submariner from my jeweler and he is telling me that it is a special watch cause it was made later in the year.
Can anyone tell me why he would say that and how is it different than a early 2008 sub I want a 2008 model cause that was the year my daughter was born Thank you |

I have no idea, but I have no doubt someone on here will be able to help you out. Rolex does make mid year changes but they are usually small updates.

Could he be referring to the maxi dial?
Is it an LV?

From swisswatchtrader.com
"Late examples of the Rolex Submariner16610, from 2008, also feature the engraved inner rehaut displaying the serial number at the 6 o'clock position." That's the last two years+ for the reference so it is actually somewhat rare. What's kinda cool is that only some 2008 have this, whereas all 2009-2010 do. |

Nothing special about 2008 Sub that I'm aware of. It would have either a M or V prefix before the number. I have a 2009 Sub with a V serial number which can be viewed on the bottom side of the bezel through the crystal. Here is a link of Rolex serial numbers in general. Good luck.

Ok this is freakin weird. I was literally looking at 2009 for the same reason 2 hours ago! Let me know how that goes.

I believe he is referring to the engraved rehaut. I purchased a Sub back in 2008 and remember having the choice of an earlier 2008 example without vs a later 2008 with the engraving. Those were the days....

An '08 watch could be a Z, M, or V serial number; there were no new prefix letter releases in '09, and Random serials began in mid 2010. Keep in mind that all of these "dating" charts and guesses are based on when somebody sees it in the market place and only has a loose relationship to when it was actually manufactured. If you are happy with where your choice fits in probabilities, go for it and enjoy. One doesn't get any more points for being made early in the year rather than later on, if anybody could know this anyway.

The engraved rehaut is what the dealer means. As well as the subsequent change to the super case and maxi dial submariner 116610.
However, it’s not rare. Some folks love the engraved rehaut. Some don’t. Buy what you like, but don’t pay a premium. It’s a submariner date and they made millions of these 16610, across many decades. Just another WIS who loves to trade. IG @bladeandwatch1

I wouldn't pay a premium for this. Every model going forward has it! It isn't rare or special in my eyes

As noted by others, he probably means the engraved rehaut. I have one from 2010 (dated the month before the ceramic model was released).
They're not particularly rare, but they're in shorter supply than non-rehaut models and were only made for a couple of years. It's essentially a transitional model. Some people put more weight on that. To answer the OP's last question, without any box or papers I wouldn't pay any premium at all and would only pay the going rate for a standard black Sub of any other year. Tough for me to say what it's worth, but as a guide there's a known seller here (sohAIS) advertising a V serial with box and papers at $10,975. Condition doesn't look great but it looks unpolished. |
