Moving to Edinburgh

I just learned that I will have to move to Edinburgh soon. I would like to know which neighbourhoods are hip right now?

I want to live somewhere cool and elegant at the same time. Not 100% "poshy" since I don't want to die from boredom. Preferably a neighbourhood close to the center.

Some people have suggested Leith, which seems to have a lot of artists, designers and architects leaving there. Sounds similar to my social circle here, but I think it is far away from the center.

I lived in Edinburgh, Stockbridge for a couple of years with fiancee number two. It's a small place and all quite cool and trendy. Quite a few Rolex dealers, good curries. Excellent diving around but the weather's generally awful. Good luck

Most folk come from Edinburgh they don't GO there.

It's nice at Arthur's seat and you can play on the paddle boats.

Find a shack at Portobello Beach.

They might have some room at the castle.

Agree with Martin - Stockbridge is a great area. We have friends in Edinburgh, and we LOVE to visit whenever we can. We haven't been back since 2002, but planning a visit to the UK in 2011, and will definitely be taking in Scotland and Edinburgh!!

The coldest winter I ever spent was the 4 days I was in Edinburgh in mid-August one year.

We went to the Tattoo during the Edinburgh Festival, at the Castle. The hotel gave us two heavy blankets and said we would need them. Boy, were they right. We froze our kishkas that night sitting in the open air. But it was worth it. The Tattoo was a wonderful experience.

As I recall, there was some good eating in Edinburgh, but it was 10 years ago, before PDAs, so I don't have a record of where we ate.

We ate at the Witchery near the castle good but expensive, and at The Bonham which was excellent and very good value

Our hotel advertised a full Scottish breakfast. I asked a friend who is Scottish, from Edinburgh, what it was. He did not have a clue. Anyway out it came looking like a full English. Eggs, bacon, mushrooms, tomato, black pudding and there it was a mini haggis!!!. Rosemary soldiered through hers but I must admit I went MIA.

Well, I actually don't think it's all that bad, Martin. If you can eat "blood" pudding, you can eat haggis. And on the plate, you always have "Neeps & Tatties". Don't forget the Cranachan for dessert!

Recipe for Cranachan (are you paying attention, Ed?):

2 ounces old-fashioned oatmeal
10 ounces fresh double cream
3 tablespoons honey
3 tablespoons good Scotch whiskey
12 ounces fresh raspberries (or other fresh soft fruit)

I passed on the Haggis after we once stopped in a pub in Cirencester and Arleen ordered a steak and kidney pie for lunch. Little did she know it was not made with kidney beans.

LOL - I LOVE steak & kidney pie. Check out my comments in the post above, Ed!

Cirencester is a beautiful old Roman town. Loved it!!!

Sounds tolerable, Allan, except for the raspberries. I absolutely detest and despise raspberries. But I guess I could substitute blueberries (which I love).

I assume by "good Scotch whiskey" is meant at least a 12 yr old single malt. Anything else is not a "good" Scotch whiskey.

It's more than tolerable, Ed. It is fantastic!!! I go to an annual Robert Burns dinner every year, and they had never had Cranachan before. I gave them the recipe, and they have it all the time now at the dinner.

You could substitute strawberries for the rasperries, and yes, the times I had it in Scotland, they used 12 year old single malt Scotch!

Used to live there, a wonderful city and plenty to do though I must admit I prefer Glasgow as a place to live. However if the commute is not possible then Leith is great, it is a bit more Avant Garde, stockbridge is lovely but is more banker/money maker territory. If you like wine bars and VW golf's then you will fit in fine there! Leith is more artsy and fun I think, Edinburgh is a great walking city and Leith is not that far from the center, certainly walkable!

If commuting is viable for you then I have to say you should check out Glasgow, one of my favorite cities in the world! The west end is great up near the University. Glasgow is a very art and music orientated city, It was city of culture all those years back for a very good reason!

I love Scotland and the Scots, If I do ever move back to the UK that is where I would live! It has everything, great cities, history, culture and the most incredible scenery. If you get a chance take a drive up the west coast past Ullapool. The roads are empty, the scenery breathtaking and the air as clean as you can get!
