Congrats Paul and excellent choice. I’m waiting on one from my AD as my retirement watch.

I bought an Omega Speedmaster Apollo 8 when my dad passed when I was reminded of the “We’ll see you on the other side” inscription on the caseback. The WG will always be very special to you and a great way to remember her.

Congratulation Paul. Beautiful choice !

Paul, I have been to several hundred funerals for coworkers/friends over the past ~20 years, I will be attending a memorial for 2 of them in the morning.

Life is short! Enjoy and pursue all of the things that bring you joy and don’t look back.

You can’t take it with you.

Now that is how to buy a watch.

Congratulations - and it is nice to know you are going to wear the hell out of it. The white gold Submariner is a thing of utter beauty, and so understated and underrated which makes it all the better. Bravo. Your mother will be proud of that choice for sure.

HUGE Congrats, Paul! Well deserved and may you enjoy it in great health for many, many years. And although I do follow your posts, thank you for sharing the backstory. It's a great reminder (only child here, as well).

PS: Looking sharp in that suit!

When I was 14, I bought my first quality watch, a Seiko 6139, for 95 dollars. I purchased my first Rolex the year I earned my Navy Pilot’s wings. Of course, it was a GMT. Since then I have owned Daytonas, Explorers, more GMTs, a Sub, a Sea Dweller, a Datejust etc. I had a two tone a couple times, but never… ever… a solid gold Rolex. It became my grail.

Yellow or rose gold is just not for me. To those of you then own them, they are phenomenal watches and wear them in good health. However I have always been really attracted to White Gold. I looked at the DayDate, but fell in love with the WG Sub when it was released a couple years ago. Of course, I’ll never get one, I can’t afford it. I should just be content with Steel watches.

Last fall, I lost my mother. I am an only child and my father died when I was young so we were very very close. Many times, she made me promise that when she was gone, I would buy myself something nice with the inheritance. She suggested a new car. While she knew of my love for fine watches, she never understood it (let’s face it, non-WiSs rarely do) but since it made me happy, she supported it. “Life is short” she always used to say. I considered a car, but honestly would get more enjoyment from obtaining a Gold Rolex.

This morning, I put on a suit and tie (a tradition whenever I buy a new Rolex), went to the AD and got my grail. I am sure my mother approves, she sees the smile on my face from up in heaven. I am going to have her birthday engraved on the back, and every time I look at it I will think of her.

Congratulations on a fantastic purchase. Your mother would certainly approve of your choice of watch, or whatever makes you happy.
Been through family loss myself so totally understand. Lost my mum and dad unexpectedly, only 2 and a half months apart. Certainly puts life into perspective. Enjoy in good health.
