Relationship Builder With AD
Hi all,
I’d like to run a scenario past you, to hear your thoughts, if possible. So I have my name on an ‘expression of interest’ list with a local AD for a Sub Date since Oct 2022. After some window shopping on a short break holiday I stumbled across a 126621 Yachtmaster TT Rosegold with chocolate face and thought it looked nice. When I got back home, I went to the same AD I have a registered interest with already to try on the 126621 black face variant on to see what it looked like on the wrist. If truth be told, I didn’t feel a connection with the watch there and then. TT watches aren’t my bag usually and I was surprised at myself for liking it in the first place. Anyhoo, the sales assistant has taken the liberty to register my interest on this piece and said that there is a good chance I would have a phone call within 12 months, being that this piece isn’t as widely popular. She also said that if I did purchase the YM, then it would likely speed up my chances of receiving the Sub Date sooner. Saying I get the call: 1) Do I purchase the piece and look to sell it to a grey dealer (not sure what I would get for it) in order to score to kudos points with the AD? 2) Do I so no to it if it doesn’t suit my eye when trying it on? What would you do? |

If it’s that important for you to speed up your chances of getting the sub, why don’t you buy another unpopular watch that you actually like and keep.

I would not buy something I didn't want and if an AD "took the liberty" of putting me on a list for a watch I did not want, I would correct their error immediately.
You should do as you see fit. I must admit to not understanding all this "relationship building" static. There are no rules. Be yourself and act as comes naturally. Just ask the SA what the timeline is for the Sub Date and if you think they are stringing you along, go somewhere else. |

You are funny , why not buy some more jewelry and other stuff you don’t really want.

I never go grey with my Rolex, but if you are buying a YM TT which the price is not cheap, for a sub-date and wait 1 year, etc., I suggest you go grey.
Unless there is another model of Rolex you like and the SA can switch to the other model. |

Don't buy what you don't want.

Rolex is the master at limiting availability to maximize profit.
Buy an Omega etc. and forget the games. |

Go grey, save yourself the time and energy and start the ownership experience right now. Tell the AD to move your interest over to a DJ with the fluted bezel, blue dial on jubilee. 41 or 36, whichever works better for you. That would be a nice two watch collection.

Welcome to The Forum!! If you're looking to build a relationship with this AD for multiple watches over a few years, It's a good way to get started, if not, never would I buy a TT with the hopes that maybe I will get my Sub, never have I lived on promises. Most TT watches are a great way to take a bath. Find a trusted grey from the forum, remember you must buy the seller, and get the watch now, problem solved. Would love to see pics on your wrist by this weekend!! Good luck!!

Buy something else you actually like, if this is just a queue jump exercise, but that won't guarantee you the Sub. I've read a few stories here from guys who spent thousands, one guy even six figures, and still didn't get the SS watch offered to them that they wanted in the first place.
I think you're better off buying a grey Sub and then sell it if the AD ever comes through for you. |

Here we go...
I've typed numerous replies to these "relationship" questions and then deleted them, but here we go.
1. Two tone watches are NOT sought after in general by majority of watch enthusiasts, collectors, or the general population. 2. As everything was hyped in 2020-current, some of these models (to my surprise) followed. 3. Buy and enjoy whatever you like. I've had approximately 35 watches during my collecting years, never one two tone. But I have plenty of watches that would be considered unpopular for various reasons. 4. Consider finances (as much as you want to). If you're considering spending time, tying up money, and trying to sell something that isn't easy for a pedestrian to sell, just to get something that you could buy grey, why spend the time and energy? Someone like you and I can't easily sell an expensive watch to a private, unless you get lucky. A private wants to buy from a trusted seller. Plus we're spending listing fees, etc. It's not that easy to sell a watch. 5. Many of these posts are about rather common watches. They are still nice, but common. "How long is the datejust line?" Come on! As soon as the market cools a little those are in the showcase. (I don't know when/if you'll see a Daytona) And you're not even being handed both watches at the same time. Buy this spam sandwich and next year I'll make you a steak. That's it for my rant (for the moment)... |

I don't think flipping the watch you get from them will speed up your chances....more like kill your chances.

Bad idea. The sooner everyone stops building the faux 'relationships' the better.

Possibly wait a year for a watch you don’t want, just to move up on a fictitious list, that you’ve been already been on for over six months?
Do you let everyone in your life f with you like this, or just Rolex dealers?

I think some of you have misinterpreted what I was trying to explain. Sorry if I didn’t fully detail things.
I didn’t say that I was only after a sub date and nothing else. There are other pieces I would like to get alongside this further down the line. Perhaps I should have explained better. |

As others have said, don't buy anything you don't want whether jewelry or watches. If you truly want the watch and it helps with purchase history, then buy it. Otherwise, pass!
