Logical 1 - or something else?

I’m looking to pull the trigger on an end game watch soon.

Stuck in Mexico for 6 - 12 months, probably until q2 2024, and I won’t have watches there for obvious reasons. Meantime I can decide on something!

I am an absolute sucker for well finished watches that are openworked/skeletonized in the style of the Logical 1. Similar aesthetics would be something like the Breguet Tradition, various GF models, or the openworked RO.

What I really dislike is weak finishing.

Trying to keep it under $150k USD second hand or new.

Anything else to consider outside of the logical 1?

Other watches I love in a similar style would be LeCompte, Jean Daniel Nicholas, etc!

For this sort of style I like the Signature 1 by Greubel Forsey the best. Preferably the steel usa edition with blue dial. Note that unlike the logical one there is no major technical innovation as the focus is on the movement architecture and finishing. I also handled the FB3 by Ferdinand Berthoud last year and that was pretty nice as well with the cylindrical hairspring.

Grönefeld and Voutilainen come to mind. Given the budget, pretty much every indie is in the range…

I would work on finding the right Voutilainen. There's no right answer here as it's all about personal preferences, but I think they will stand the test of time better than the RJ Logical 1s. I like open-worked pieces, and the Logical 1 is surely a mechanical piece of art, but the aesthetics always strike me as somewhat off.

Or maybe sign up (if you can) for a future delivery of the new Simon Brette. That piece is stunning and well within your price range, and to my eye is much nicer than the Logical 1.

Forsey is probably a bit above budget, no? I thought closer to ~$200 even used? I tried a few out, and found they were too large.

Which Gronefelds have openworked dials? Owned a 1941 Principia and it was cool, very well built for sure.

I love the Simon Brette, right up my alley, but I dont think I will ever be able to get one. Looks like it is sold out until ~2027 or even further out. I am sure the next time the list opens pricing will be closer to $300k+ instead of $66k.

Love Voutilainen...Ill email them to ask about pricing for custom work! I am going to be seeing one in-person at a watch meet up in vancouver later this month.

Good luck! Great position to be in to be able to acquire a Voutilainen, if that's what you choose. They will likely have a long wait too...

Signature 1 is smaller than the L1 but yes, hard to find under $150k. The S1 is more than the FB3 but finishing is superior to the FB3. Side by side I hate to say it but the GF S1 made the FB3 look cheap. The FB3 just has too much sand blasting for that kind of money. FB1 and FB2 are a different story though and different price.

Voutilainen list must be unto 2027 by now so its a committment.....

If you like the L1, I would just get the L1!

If you can find an Inverse, it is almost an Openwork. (At least to me)

I think the order for Voutilainen now stretches into 2028. I just inquired if I can add one more to my order and the feedback is at least after 2028.

There's a nice Kari Inverted coming up for auction soon which may be right up your alley.

Yes, love the Inverse. I actually do not mind a wait if the deposit policy is reasonable. I am not sure how I'd feel about giving a watchmaker an interest free 5 year loan for $150k lol :)

Maybe ill email!

Yup! Wait is until 2028 but not a huge deal. I am stuck in Mexico until 2025 probably anyways, which is a no-watch place for me. :)

I am excited!
