I have no interest in going to resorts, so personally I wouldn't take mine with me.

Most Far Eastern Asian cities are very safe but that is not because of high-income. There are too many reasons to list but not just Japan and as many people said, there are safer areas and relatively unsafe areas in any city in any country.

Likewise, not a resort person.

I guess we could banter about this till the cows come home. The US has posted travel advisories to many countries to different degrees from levels 1-4...but there not suggesting
Not to travel to Mexico. Granted Mexico has its issues but then again so does the US,..with all the recent gun violence and deaths. https://travel.state.gov/content/tra...e-caution.html.
There are problems everywhere but like anything else it's your choice where you go.
Just saying...
All I can add is that in all the many times I've traveled in Mexico, Ive never had any issues at all with my safety. All my encounters have been amiable and amicable.

I wouldn’t risk going to Mexico period let alone going to Mexico with an expensive watch. Heck I wouldn’t risk going to San Francisco with a Rolex either for that matter.

I jest of course. I generally do wear it everywhere I go but there are some places that I feel wearing anything remotely expensive puts too much of a target on you. Mexico is definitely one of those places and it isn’t like I would even trust the police to not be in on it- letting the thief get away with it and splitting the proceeds afterwards.

I’ll repost:
“Of 31 states in Mexico, the US State Department recommends “Exercise Normal Precautions” in only 2 (Yucatan and Campeche).

The remaining 29 states are in these categories: “ Do Not Travel To”, “Reconsider Travel To”, or “Exercise Increased Caution When Traveling To.”

I’m not going to make any recommendations, but when I went diving in Cozumel last year I brought my titanium Stowa. I wouldn’t bring a valuable watch, but I get out and about and don’t stay inside the gates of 5 star resorts.”

The US State Department indeed is saying “Do Not Travel To” 6 states in Mexico and has warnings for 23 other states (so 29 of 31 states have a warning).

When I google “US state department travel advisories” the first DuckDuckGo autofill is Mexico.

But by this point I have to assume the OP has looked at the warnings and will make a decision that works for his situation.

Quite a few times ranging from a business trip to Mexico City to a few cruises to Cozumel and stayed in Cancun twice for a wedding each time. Oh and Tijuana and Nogales years ago.

Everyone has their own opinion and mine is, from both firsthand experience and the knowledge and experience of some of the people we’ve employed in Mexico, that the police cannot be trusted, the housekeeping staff are thieves, and there is a massive amount of corruption in the resort towns and tourist areas. I’m not even talking about cartel violence or anything like that. I mean sheer collusion of authorities, vendors, street thugs, etc.

Where there is massive poverty and an enormous number of wealthy tourists…you have created a situation that is so conducive to theft, scams, and corruption on an astounding level.

The thread title is:
“Is it safe to wear a Rolex in Mexico?” not the US. However, as noted murder per capita in Mexico is seven times greater than US.

To that end from the US State Department

https://travel.state.gov/content/tra...-advisory.html

I’ve been to Mexico many times, but will not being wearing a Rolex there again.

Sadly it’s become a much more dangerous country to visit.
