Is it sacrilege to swap original hands on a vintage piece to prevent lume flaking?
I've got a Tudor 7021 with original hands and dial. The lume in some of the hands is already beginning to show some cracks (dial in phenomenal condition).
I wear this piece regularly and I'm worried I'll do more damage to the hands with accidental impacts, vibration, etc. I know this is 100% preference, so what is your opinion... is it acceptable to swap out the hands for a matching new set? Of course I'll keep the old hands, safely stored. |

It’s possible for the flakes to get into the movement so some places may not service the watch with out replacement hands

You can definitely have the Lume stabilized by a watchmaker. At my service with Phillip Ridley I asked him to stabilize the Lume in the hands because there were a few cracks, which he did (thanks Phillip!). It might be applied to the back so not as noticeable and preserves the 50-year old tritium Lume bits like on mine. Just a thought. I’m sure it will turn to dust eventually.

Yes, just have the lume stabilized.

All the ∆ agree 100% - a 7021 needs a stabilized matching orig. handset.

Disintegrating hands sitting in a safe are of little value to anybody. Even multimillion dollar artwork is repaired and stabilized.

Stabilized the lume on my 16800. Now I enjoy it daily with no worries.
