What did this buying story tell you?

I think she had her own customer, who was coming in the following day, and since it’s “first come, first serve”, she couldn’t save the watch for her/him. Simply put, she lost a sale. That would explain her saying they didn’t have it, and then trying to talk you out of it. Congrats on the new Datejust. Can we see a pic? Oh, and BTW, “tough crowd!”

Completely unrelated to the OP, I think many people walk into Rolex ADs with chips on their shoulders and active imaginations.

I knew the crowd is tough more than 10 years ago when I started to collect watches, but I didn't even register an account back then, I was just observing.

Some responses here have valid points, for example it might be presumptuous to think 'Cathy' pretended to check the availability of the watch. Some points I can easily refute but I don't want to, because I learned over the years that a person can never win an argument over the internet.

Anyhow here is a crappy wrist shot I did at my night table. The dial is shining complimented by diamonds at the same time very legible to me at least.

By the way, why can't I see the picture here. It's a link to google photo.

Beautiful. Congrats! I like the dial. I am on a list at my AD, for a 36 mm Datejust. He keeps telling me to be patient. He’s working on it.

I was originally aiming for a no-frill style DJ36, i.e. white/silver dial no diamonds. But I just couldn't pass this opportunity as the dial is really attractive. I ended up spending 30% over the budget.

Thanks for the kind words, I am a mentally strong person. Otherwise I wouldn't be where I am now.
Over the years in real life I have learned how to fight back without actually fighting.v

Since I work in commissioned retail my take is that she had to split the commission with David, who was not there to “cover” her by making a sale for them to split as well. And as Kat said she likely had it sold to another client. In her mind she went from a full commission sale on a done deal to a half (or possibly no commission though unlikely) without any help or coverage from David.

Or she doesn’t like David and just didn’t want to help make him money. I’ve said all the wrong things to prospective buyers just to not have to split a deal with another sales rep I didn’t like. Petty? Absolutely. Stupid? Maybe. But commissioned retail is cutthroat for a reason.

I don’t see what the big deal is all about. As for the woman’s attitude, no one here really knows a thing. Enjoy your watch.

I just want to know where all these AD stories come from? Am I just lucky that the family owned place I go to acts normal? The worst I've ever been treated by an AD (not my local one) was indifference. I've never had anyone play a game or tell me something wasn't in when it was or vice versa. They either took my info and told me they'd call or showed me the piece if they had it.

Maybe a commission was driving her lack of enthusiasm, but more likely she was hoping you'd turn it down so she could offer it to one of HER customers. Bet she had a couple in mind, for sure...

Most of these stories, through my experience as well, comes from going to the big stores within city centers / capitals. Especially in south east asia where all the nice stores are going to be located in certain posh areas.

Certainly different vs finding the stores in more rural places such as in Europe (UK, France, Italy etc) or in the US?

Congrats

You got a DJ. I wouldn’t pyscho-analyze the mind set of the SA unless you’re a psychiatrist but then again who cares what what going on in the head of SA

It tells me that your AD is very different to mine in that it has product that it’ll sell without 6 years of waiting.

I’d crack on and get the watch you like from them whatever the experience with the rep (assuming it’s not rude/belligerent etc.). These days a person needs to be less picky to get a watch and be thankful you did get one!

Bet she didn't or else she would have pulled those out of the safe instead!
