Case numbers, model numbers and serial numbers
I'm confused. Too many numbers!
I've just bought a Rolex (Submariner) and I know it can be identified by various numbers. As I understand it... 1) there's a six digit serial number - which on my watch begins with a V followed by five digits. Is this unique to my watch or is it shared? 2) there's also a model number (16610) - which clearly isn't unique and which presumably just identifies the model (sub + date etc). This bit I think I understand! 3) and I think there's a case number - which I think must be inside the case and on the outside hidden by the bracelet. I don't know what this is. And I don't think it's on the documents which came with my watch. (I bought from a reputable AD) Am I supposed to know what this number is? And, again, is it unique to my watch? As you can see I'm just a little confused. Am I supposed to keep any of these numbers secret? As ever, thanks for your help everyone. Jason |

Hi Jason,
The number you refer to are the model number and serial number, they also can be located on the watch itself, here is an example: And more recently the serial can be seen on the rehaut engraving. The model as you have said is the style of the watch the serial is a way of dating the watch EG: my SXXXXXX serial on my DJ dates the watch around 93-94, I would keep the complete serial to yourself, but when asked, quote the first digit, that is enough to date the watch :-) Hope this helps clear a few things up Dave.

Hi Jason..
1) That 6 digit number is your watch serial number... it is unique to your watch and not shared by any other Rolex... 2) The model number 16610, is the same for every Sub Date model 3) No, you do not have a case number... that is the serial number previously stated and it is under the bracelet on the case.... However, inside, your watch does have a unique serial number on the movement too, but it is not used for anything outside of service papers at Rolex Corporate.. No need to fret.. your not "supposed" to know any of those numbers unless you feel the need to.... none of those numbers are a secret although some are relulctant to divulge their full serial numbers in case somebody should steal it for their own use..

Many say the serial number dates the watch, except Rolex and Ad's say the actual born on date is the day of purchase and the serial number is only a guide, but not a dating process. I am still not sure who is right, but I think I understand both sides...lol
