Would you wear your Rolex to prison???

Here's my story. I was always into watches growing up and the first time I saw a Submariner I knew that I had to have one. My mother saw my obsession and used it to her advantage and promised me one if I went and graduated from college. I never was into school and just kind of did what I had to to get decent grades. I screwed around in college got kicked out, dropped in and out and eventually took a civil service exam and ended up getting a job as a prison guard when I was 22. Luckily most of my friends were still in college, so I went back and finished a couple of years later. My mother upheld her end of the bargain and bought me my sub in 1999.
I have always kept the watch on a winder and only wore it when going out to dinner, vacations or special occasions. I recently started wearing the watch almost daily when I'm not at work but am still a little hesitant about wearing in to work. I've made my way up the ranks in the prison to a middle management position and really am not getting down and dirty as much as I use to.
How many of you, if you were in my position would say screw it and wear it to work?

Of course I would wear it to work........... even in a prison, it's much safer than downtown LA.

I myself would not wear anything which personalised me or made me stand out in any way, whilst working in a prison. I'm sure you must have training on these issues and will be better informed than myself, just my thoughts.

I would think you would want to avoid any unwanted 'attention' from the inmates and/or their friends.

If I worked at a prison and want my integrity uncompromised, I would leave the rolex at home. If I was going to prison for a crime, a rolex will be way down the list ..the BOOTY BANDIT will be make the top of the list......

a Two Tone, when the inmates throw fecal matter at you .....

You mentioned that you are in "middle management." If don't have direct contact with inmates, then it seems safe enough; especially if you wear long sleeves. A Subbie is easy to conceal under a sleeve. Now if you're wearing a YG Subbie blinged out with diamonds, that's too flashy. Now if you are handling the inmates, then you shouldn't bring your Rolex. Get a Casio or Suunto. Rolex is well known to all those gangsta rapper types. Don't prisons have some inmates working in the prison these days? If you have prisoners mopping floors and making coffee around you, I'd avoid it.

Something to think about, tough call to make with out being in your situation, knowing how you dress, long/short sleeve etc.., dirt bags may or may not notice a expensive watch, got to figure if there thieves they may..

One thing I would think about is an imate saying this SOB gaurd wears a 10k watch to one of his buddys on the outside, may not be attention you want..

I agree, I wouldn't have anything that distinguishes me from any of the others...I thought that was the thought train behind the use of uniforms.

i don't see a problem - if anyone asks, just blow it off as a fake. most would probably think it was fake, and who notices watches anyways. or disguise it by wearing it on a strap. i've been asked for the time by some pretty scary looking characters and i've looked at my rolex and told it to them and they seemed pretty unaware. mind you, an ak probably looks like a seiko or citizen to most folks.

Who notices watches? Prison is a virtual "house of thieves." Placing it on a strap won't disguise the case. Why tempt fate? To me, this would be akin to displaying drugs to addicts.

(It also throws in the inmates faces, "look at what I got.")

Not sure what or who you are implying to here with regards to your statement about "Gangsta Rapper Types"? Care to explain? Not sure every one in prison listens to or mimics gansta rappers.

i strongly agree. it's much safe than Brooklyn, NY. my watch is useless that i have to leave them in winder. i don't see her unless i opened my safe.

Fortunately I do not have sufficient personal experience to give a valid opinion. If you are an inmate, then unless you are the strongest guy in the joint, I think you are going to get your Rolex removed (either you hand it over or it is physically removed by the tough guy.....I'll let you fill in the dots........)

If you are a prison guard, well if you get into a physical situation, you could get your watch bashed up against a solid object or if a situation arises, you could get bashed.

On the other hand it is cool wearing a nice watch at anytime.

I am a Deputy Sheriff, and I wear either my SS Submariner or my Explorer II to work everyday. I even go into the county jail wearing them.

I have worn it a couple of times and had a few comments from the inmates, just play it off as a fake. I'm not really concerned about the inmates coming after me for the watch. I supervise a lock up/segregation area were the i/m's are locked in the cell 23+ hours a day. They don't leave the cell without being handcuffed. I'm more concerned about banging it up. I have been wearing Seiko automatics that I buy strictly for work and last only about 3 years and look like they have been through a world war. I'm having a hard time envisioning my sub looking like one of the Seikos.
But the position I'm in now is not a physically demanding on me and my watch and that is the only reason I'm considering wearing it now.

You have more experience than any of us to answer the question. If there is physical contact like restraining prisioners then I would not.
