Does anyone have any experience selling a watch on Chrono or any of the other main ones? I went to a local jeweler who buys used Rolexes and they weren't willing to come close to the price Chrono claims I can get. I understand I wouldn't get the Chrono price so I offered a few thousand less figuring we could negotiate from there and they just said "no thanks". They said that most online sites offer 1 price and when they get it they lower their offer to you. Is this true or is the local place full of it?

I have good experiences with Chrono (but in Europe). Basically it’s just a platform to sell. They take a high provision but you have a huge audience and a lot of interests. Also the trusted checkout is great for both partied. Sold 2 or 3 watches there.
In Europe Chrono24 also buys watches as a reseller. Prices vary, depending on watch.

I've sold two watches to Watchfinder in the UK. They gave me the best offer on both occasions and paid what they said they would. If you are selling privately via shop window like C24 you will not get dealer sale prices. Added to this, if you end up selling to the buyer from hell all you've got is you. Dealers have insurance and legal facilities.

This shows the true state of the market. We all understand grey dealers/jewelers needs to make money, but even the most sought after references like the GMT are having a hard time these days ..

Most of the jewelers are not even paying cash/check and would rather take the watch for a consignment only. Their cash flow is low these days as the stock is mowing slowly ..

Yes, that is very true. Even for Rolex, if the date just is selling for 10,000, if it’s an individual, I would imagine I could get them to sell it for 9000 on average. An established secondhand dealer, maybe 9500? The hottest of the hot models maybe not, but pretty much everything else can be negotiated. Also Chrono24 will take a cut. Also, you are just a random person, no offense, so you cannot command as high of a price as an established secondhand dealer on Chrono24.
For a $10,000 watch, six or 7000 might be fair. Doing it at a brick and mortar store in person, you pay to not have any risk. You don’t ship, you don’t deal with sketchy people.

Well said .. People check the chrono24 and think their worn Pepsi is worth $18K while in reality hardly any grey dealer or jeweler would pay them cash at all for it and even if they do, it will likely be in a $13-14K range. Selling online and meeting in person by yourself could get you injured or robbed or both.

Have you tried watchcollecting.com? I’ve sold direct to Watchfinder, on Chrono24 and via watchcollecting.com. For anything worth north of 8k I’d go with watchcollecting as you’ll get true market value and don’t pay commission. Less than that I’ve found Chrono24 is better - usually ends up about 10% higher than what Watchfinder would offer

yes c24 prices are a bit inflated, but the ballpark numbers are not that far off (and still lower than on most re-sellers like watchbox, chronext etc.). and as others have mentioned already, the escrow and verification services are quite good.

I sold an Omega Speedy Racing 44 to a private buyer on Chrono 24, at a price close to their valuation. A dealer would have given me a lot less, like half the market value. Bear in mind dealers ask a gross margin of 30 to 50% on what they sell, depending on how quick and easy it is to sell a given model.

I recently went through this same thing when I sold a couple of Rolex watches I had. Rolex resellers are not going to buy your watch for what the average selling price is online, in most cases, not even close. If they did, then they wouldn't make any money. These dealers have a percentage markup they must meet to be profitable, just like used car dealers. Also, they have many sources to buy watches, so they have an idea of what the wholesale price is, and what other dealers are paying. If you want more money for your watch, you will have to sell it privately.

Bought and sold plenty of watches on Chrono24. Either shipped them or did a deal in person and never experienced any issues. Don’t be so incredibly paranoid and simply use common sense when it comes to buyers. As for anyone selling: I‘m never concerned since Chrono24 is keeping the money until I give the OK. Selling to a watch dealer is a total rip off, they‘d pay 50% of the market value and if you have that much money to throw away, then good riddance…

That also goes for selling a watch to the what people call "trusted dealers" on this forum. I tried to sell my 2023 OF Daytona to one of these dealers and they offered $32K. They had one on their website for $59K. Hmmm

I get it that they need to make a profit, but almost 100%.

Yikes! That’s pretty greedy and even if you‘d received more, it wouldn’t be worth it. It’s not difficult to sell privately without getting robbed. There’s just plenty of safe, public locations. Worst case you can have a friend or two with you. I‘d say that kind of „trouble“ is easily worth $27k, imo. Glad you didn’t sell.

Yeah, selling to private users is a long and painful process. Especially brands besides Rolex.
If you don’t want any hassle then go to a dealer. But you pay for that convenience.

Not sure how Chrono24 comes up with their numbers, but they seem high to me. I would assume they are based on historical sales on that platform. There is a lot of mark-up on most used watches, as used watch dealers need to pay their bills and make a living just like the ADs. That percentage varies on the dealer and the watch.

It is pretty simple.

Chrono24 quotes a market price. The only way you can achieve anything near to a market price, is to sell the watch privately. And even then, the buyer needs to justify buying from you and not a retail store, and that normally comes down to the private seller being cheaper.

A dealer will provide you with a trade in price, which is the estimated retail price, less the costs involved to get the watch retail ready and his profit margin.

It's the same when you trade in your car.

Yes Ive bought 4 and sold 3 on chrono24. Chrono24 is a great place to sell becuase youre mostly cutting out the middleman (watch dealer) and selling directly to another person. They take a cut, but its much less than what a watch dealer would take. The escrow service they provide also makes it a safe transaction

People do tend to ask for prices that are too high on chrono24 though as sellers. If you want to sell price below these inflated prices and youll get immediate insterest. If you want to buy try to haggle

Also Tim at Fog City , he's a member here and buys and cosigne .

Don't take it personally , the market is kind of in a unknown state right now. The dealers are wise ( as they should be ) and have stale merchandise. Bottom line it's not the best time be selling. 🫣 Best Chris

I’ve used Chrono24 quite a bit, but I’ve only ever managed to sell one watch there. I currently have the cheapest unworn Hamilton Intra-matic on there, but no bites. I’ve never sold any Rolexes through it, despite being well priced (comparatively).

Tough market at the moment, though.

-35% of Chrono24 advertised price is roughly what your watch is really worth to sell into the trade. That's IF they will even buy it.
