Is OP asking just for fun or is OP asking because he only cares about perceived value on the secondary market and/or Instagram flex points instead of getting what he likes/will use?

certainly the top 3 have been hot for several years now, and over-hyped at that (most buying the Rolex name and not knowing what they just bought). I would add the submariner ln to the list as well (judging by what my AD has told me). Personally, the SD isnt of much interest to me (at least not yet anyway). And fortunately, the other top 3 I obtained years ago - including a 5 digit and 11 series ceramic sub ln.

While not all that popular, a personal fav has always been the 40mm YM fits in during the summers we spend on our boat at the yacht club. Years ago I sold my original (silver dial), and recently acquired a blue dial 116622. As someone else stated, I buy what I like regardless of hype.

Only the two steel Daytonas and maybe the Pepsi bezel GMT are truly hot. The rest are below retail watches benefiting from the current hype.

Avoid like the plague.

Why?

Because sooner or later you'll find yourself in a room full of your peers and they'll all be wearing the same watch as you are.

NOT a good feeling.

Whatever JayZ, LeBron James... or that guitar guy is wearing, those are the hot models.

Best bet might be to blindly follow influencers ;-)

All still popular. They are all trending down though. Which is a good thing so people buy them to enjoy them and not make money on them.

Only the Daytonas are what you’d call “long-term” hot. They were hot before the pandemic hype phase and will be popular long after this cool down too.

So maybe not “hot” but rather “great” pieces.

4) Sky-Dweller: Owned the blue; it was too large for me. Setting it required retraining each time I wore it in rotation. Too much work and too big for me. It would be great as an only or primary watch if it weren't so large.

Brett, since you asked why not say what you think about the watches? Good to see you post.
I have to ask as I’ve seen some beautiful photos of your bluesy—you say the GMT Pepsi is too flashy. I should soon be receiving the new bluesy from my AD and also have a BLNR on jubilee. What do you feel makes the GMT flashier since I’ll have both in the collection. I honestly viewed the bluesy as way flashier (in the best possible way.)

My preferred watches are not required to be hype ones, but it seems that they are hyped.

The Skydweller is so easy that remember the process ( and I wrote my two versions a lot)

I think to be fair a new basic edition strong collection should be:

A Daytona SS (wears small)
A Pepsi, a Batman or Lefty
A Datejust, white or blue dial (36mm ok)
A Sub or Sub Date, one with green bezel or not
A Skydweller SS or gold or oyster.flex
A Polar Explorer II
A new GMT TT
An OP, color dial Tiffany blue, or Green (36 mm ok if need be )
A DD 40 YG white dial or Everose ( must have a dd)

maybe add and An Airking for oddity or new Cellini.

I like them all except the SkyD. Too thick and chunky.

My blue Sky-Dweller on Oyster is spectacular! But BLRO will always remain my favorite. Daytona is too cluttered for me and bezel is useless for a pilot. I prefer black Submariner--no frills.
Nothing on Rolex radar as am satisfied with my 4 Rolex collection. Don't forget the polar ExplorerII--best everyday watch and tool watch in the catalog.

As good as Rolex is at providing an excellent mass produced watch...

its marketing ability is even better.

Yea, case on point. Popularity is a moving target but some will always be “the one” as others jump up and down the popularity list.
