Would you rather have 3-4 watches vs 1 heavy hitter?

These are interesting threads to me, as my POV on collecting watches has evolved thru the years. I currently own 7 watches, 1-Tudor, 1-Tag, 1-Panerai, 1-Breitling, and 3-Rolexes.
The Tudor and the Tag have been given to my sons to wear and keep.
All 3 of the Rolexes are GMT's, 2 of them are BLNR's. While that might seem strange, the intent is to give each son a BLNR, as they both found them to be there favorite Rolex. It leaves me with a VTNR, a very cool watch for me, a lefty.
This will leave me 3 watches, which I think is a good number to own and rotate. I think any changes to my 3 would be a trade, not an add. Maybe trade the Breitling and PAM for 1 watch, we will see.

You know, it's more about what the watch is, and what I need/want it for. When you start talking about collecting, then (for me) it becomes an issue of how often I can- and will- wear it and does that make sense.

I don't think I would choose the one, no matter how heavy. If you said I could have $50K for 3-4 watches or $100K for 1, I would take the $50K. I like a little variety. Although I will say, there is a base where I would take just one, and that's probably $5K. With that amount to spend I think I would take one watch.

Have you tried one on? They’re relatively flashy due to the polished case and also bigger than youd expect.
It’s an absolute stunner though.

In my view a collection should have some staples (ex Submariner(s), GMT(s)) and 2-3 heavy hitters.

You acquire the staples as they become available, and continue to work towards the heavy hitters. My AD has a list of watches on my wish list and a few are labelled as "Grail" pieces. My Grail's include Platinum Daytona and a couple of Nautilus models.

Currently I have a YG White dial Day Date 40, and a PP 5712R. I would consider both of those heavy hitters. I am still working towards at least one more.

I'm with you. That's the way it should be IMO. I find myself matching my watch(color or style ) to my outfit. So I need a variety of them to stay " fresh " stay "flexy" if you know u know. Lol.
Year 2018 Right after I turned 30 I decided I needed somethings significant to mark alongside my life journey, I started luxury watch buying in 2019 market was hot, hard to get a sports piece. Had Gshocks earlier then that. Took me awhile to figure out the "game". Now I got awesome SAs that would advocate for me, took me years to build the relationship. This year I began venturing out to other brands, but no means I'm " Rolexed out " if that's a term. There are still more than a hand full of current and discountinued rolexs I want. I know I'm gonna add a panerai not because I want it for the sak of collecting. Because there is 1 discountinued reference I really want. I'm gonna add a black Tudor pelagos FXD. I've been going to AP boutique they offered me 2 pieces which I'm not too keen on so I declined waiting on the right one. I'm also looking at neo vintage 39mm AP ROCs. My end game would be what I have now with a few ROCs plus an AP openwork of any config. That's as far I can see at this moment. As most of you know. Things always change. Our taste changes with age. So probably more to come.

The problem with having 1 heavy hitter vs a collection of lower priced watches is you will inevitably encounter situations where you will be hesitant to wear a $40K watch, so you will wind up buying less expensive watches for those ocasions. So I think even with a big one you still need a supporting cast.

When I have a watch that I REALLY like, I tend to wear it till death. A
"heavy hitter" to me means PM's and or stones. For my lifestyle this type of watch would be useless and honestly would not wear them if they were free.

Most of the time "heavy hitters" will have poor water resistance, Shock protection and sensitive to magnetism. Just won't do for me. Or fragile in the aspect of materials used.

Wearing a watch that I really love leaves little time for a big collection. So after 45 years of buying, collecting and selling I have come full circle to just a couple. I usually wear one 24/7 Monday thru Friday. Then switch to another for the weekend. My weekend watch is also my standby when my primary is being serviced. There is 1 more I will add just because I like it. That will be a Speedy around mid 2024. I have the one in mind that I want.

Overall pretty happy to be able to slim down a collection and enjoy watches as much as I use to.

I understand quality over quantity, but I'm not sure it really applies to the examples some here have given. Is a PM Rolex higher quality than a SS Rolex? I do not think so, it's just more expensive material. They both do the same, same engine on the inside, same finishing, same longevity, just different price for the different metal. So I see all Rolex as basically on par with each other in terms of quality. AP openworked vs AP RO, or Patek perpetual vs calatrava is a different matter. Ultimately, they are all high quality - just buy what you like and can rationalize.

I feel this is correct. I could never be a one watch person even though that is exactly what I did for 25 yrs. I found I got tired of owning mainly SS Rolex watches and did add PM pieces. I feel that I tend to change my collection here and there but love the SS for day to day wear. I would say keep working with your AD to get the one you want and if you have to sell some (but not all) to be where you feel content then do it.

This for me. I’m a new collector. I’ve been collecting for 2 months & only have a $40k, 4 watch collection. I enjoy the variety right now, and would love to add 6-8 more pieces.

I could see myself winnowing the collection down in the future to 3-5 top pieces, especially if pieces aren’t being worn on a regular basis.
