Thanks, I enjoyed your review, as I usually do. I have a couple of questions though: If it's a solar watch (no need to change the battery), why the need for a screwdown caseback. And, do you have any pics of what is under the caseback?

Even though it is solar, you still should open it and lube the gasket.
My other screewback had condensation after 10 years, so I opened it up, dryed it and lubed the gasket, it hasn't repeated after that.
When you have a plastic one with 4 metal screws holding the caseback, if you overtighten you strip the threads.

Also, cool thing about gshocks is that you change the bezel and strap when the first ones get destroyed and BAM, you have a brand new spanking watch.

I've seen people strip the lug holes on plastic case ones or even brake the lugs (Rangeman) when changing the strap.
And the new plastic case usually costs almost as the whole watch.

With screwbacks, due to them being steel, you don't have such problems.

As for pictures, I only opened my regular battery operated DW5000, and underneath it's got a layer of rubber for shock protection and underneath the movement that, unlike most quartz watches, fills out the whole case, so it's a joy to see.

No, almost ALL Gshocks and Casios are made in China and Thailand.

Only Casio Oceanus is made in Japan.
As for Gshocks, next to those high end MRG GShocks, only Frogman and GW5000 are made there (Japan)

Everyone should own a G. I actually have a couple (the best two ever, IMO)… the GW-5000U and the venerable Riseman GW-9200-1

I've been going back and forth between this and the 5610U for a while now (since the strap broke on my F 84-W), mainly for a watch to wear in bed so I can check the time in the early hours of the morning without waking my wife and two dogs. As the 5610U contains the same module, seems very legible and easy to read at night, and is quite a bit lighter than the 5000U so maybe easier to sleep with, I just went with that.

I guess the fact that it's less than half the price also played a part and I have a couple of JDM Seiko watches anyway. I also enjoyed your review of the 5610U and will be looking at your 3495 module guide when my 5610U arrives from Osaka in a few days.

The 5610 (both U and non U) together with the GW6900 are probably one of the best overall "bang for buck" watches out there!!

6900 is better for travelers as it can display two time zones at the same time and has a dedicated light button which is easier to "find" in the dark, so you might want to check that out as well.

I mean for the price these go for, it's quite remarkable what you get

Thanks, I can see the benefits of the 6900 but I prefer the square design. I ordered a 5610U from a dealer in Osaka on Amazon for US$124 but no news after 2 days so I cancelled the order and found one here in HK for US$90. In the interim I almost got an A168 in a fit of nostalgia but could only find the made in China versions here. Might still get one if I can find a made in Thailand model
