How confident are you?

Apparently very... according to poll numbers, especially for men. For years, polls have said that 90+% of people consider themselves above average drivers with 82% of men saying they are "exceptional drivers."

How about landing a commercial aircraft? According to a new poll, half of men believe they can safely land a plane if the pilot(s) became incapacitated.

Driving a vehicle? 100% confident no question. Landing a plane? Not a clue!

That being said, if I were ever in a situation where my choices were “land it or die” I’d sure still try lol (hopefully with some radio guidance at least from someone who actually knew what they were doing).

More to the point of the article, I would also gladly yield the controls to anyone else with even the tiniest amount of experience flying an aircraft.

Side note I bet in the not too distant future (if they can’t already) commercial airliners will be able to be landed remotely (operated by an emergency pilot on the ground) in the case of pilot/co pilot incapacitation.

This is interesting, my old boss was the CIO of the company I worked at, who was a big gear head, had planned to purchase the new first gen BMW M6 when it came out and pick it up in Stuttgart, Germany. He drove around, "being passed by mothers in mini-van's" on the Autobahn when he was taking it to get upgrades to wheels, tyres, brakes etc., and to put the first 1,000km on it.

He had spent the previous year intensely playing one of those racing Sims and learning every inch of the Nürburgring. He had the steering wheel, pedals, monitors, complete set up for this Sim so he could learn the track.

He had hired a long retired F1 driver to coach him, he had a chase car, cameras, everything to make this happen, spent over a month in Germany preparing and running the Ring. He mentions, Jackie Stewart once said: “People who say they like the Nurburgring are either lying or they’re not going fast enough.”

His plan was also to be recorded breaking 200 mph and "joining that club". He got it all on film, he wrote an article that appeared in a big driving magazine when he did it. He had a chase car, they hit the Frankfurt-Darmstadt autobahn just as dawn was breaking and traffic was light and he did it.

Saw the car parked beside me in our spots when he got back, custom license plate - Nürburgring or some variation of that on the M6.

So some of these programs can really teach a lot apparently....

My wife certainly thinks that I can do it.

“ OK, OK land your plane”

This is why you fly a Cirrus Vision Jet. Can be remotely controlled, and if all else fails then release the parachute.

It depends. I’m pretty sure I could land a small propeller plane with the right guidance from the ground. A Boeing 777 is a completely different story altogether.

My wife closes her eyes every time I go around a corner too fast... and I'm an excellent driver... Have no clue what she would say if I told her "I have to go land this plane... shouldn't be too long, and get us on the gate a couple minutes early."

I’ve spent enough time with these in the past to know stall speeds, when to operate flaps, operate gear, activate reverse thrust, etc etc on a 737 and 747 specifically. But to say I’d just be able to land them like the pros is asinine. So I’d say a good 80% of that 50% are clowns.

I’ve had for lack of a better word “crash courses” in how to fly and land a plane. I have a rudimentary understanding of the dynamics and controls of small aircraft. I presume it’s the same with larger aircraft, just different stall speed and more buttons.

That being said, I would be confident to take control as long as I had ATC and 121.5 on the radio. Hopefully 121.5 wouldn’t be full of meows at the time I needed help.

If I didn’t have ATC to guide me, and no one on 121.5 to walk me through I’d have to say a desirable landing in an aircraft I am not familiar with would not be happening. We may make it out alive but it most likely won’t be pretty.

Too slow, too low. Save a couple million and get the SR22 if you think your skills are weak and need a plane that finds an airport and lands itself. The vision jet under performs for anyone with confidence.

I have flown small planes for 20 years and helicopters for 10 years as a private pilot in VMC. But I wouldn't want to have to land an airliner I am unfamiliar with and even less so in foul weather.

Maybe I am just suffering from lack of confidence... LOL

Now that I think about it, the article didn't mention anything about what airport. For example, landing into Hong Kong with cross winds??? Not exactly easy for the most seasoned veteran pilot.

Anyone ever see those photos of the KLM 747 coming into San Martinne just feet over a crowded beach? That may be a little tough for some of you guys.

I fly large jets for a living. I think lined straight up on the runway with the aircraft configured for landing some people might salvage something they could survive but not 50%. However if the pilots became incapacitated at cruise altitude just figuring out how to manage the radio panel would be rather tricky for most, much less getting the airplane from cruise altitude to the runway of intended landing. Lot of stuff has to happen between cruise and landing.

You make it sound so difficult. It’s quite easy… simply tap the controls in the right order and the thing pretty much lands itself.

I used to pilot a Cessna 172 recreationally. I'm also an avid motoring enthusiast. I'd say flying is quite a bit more challenging than pushing my track car at 9/10ths on a road course...

As long as you're in contact with the tower and can keep your head, i'd imagine a commercial airliner would be easier for someone with no experience to land than a small single-engined aircraft.
