How different DJ colourways are performing on the used market in the UK

I in no way want to sell my Rolex, which has just pipped my green Breitling Navitimer as my favourite watch, but I find these comparisons interesting, as they show buying and taste habits more then anything else. Yes, I am nosey!

These things change every day, and one dealer's experience in one location would be different from another dealer's experience in another location, but this video I found very interesting that a dealer has been so honest and open.

Of course this dates pretty quickly, for example, the motif dials being at the top. This video was made October 2023. Although IMHO it equates quite nicely to second hand prices I see, for example on chrono24 in Europe at least. It also only covers SS watches.

Sorry about the quality of the picture, but it is a screen shot from the youtube, as it is not published anywhere.

The different categories represent the premium over new price. This of course will change over time, but it is the relative position, not the price, that what interests me.

But anyway, for folk who might find this interesting I have posted here.

Mint green being "A" makes sense. It's a nice color, and it's relatively new. Of course I'm not biased at all owning one myself...

The fluted one's being "S" tier and commanding the most over MSRP is interesting, especially considering that other recent post where multiple people mentioned that the fluted dials are being discontinued...

FYI, The fluted dial has nothing to do with fluted bezels. They are two entirely different things. Fluted bezels are synonymous with the Rolex Datejust, and have been around for decades. The fluted dials are very particular dials, that have a fluted effect, and were released in 2021.

I should have phrased better. I did mean dials using the fluted motif being "S" tier and very desirable when they are apparently being discontinued seems strange. If they're so desirable, why discontinue? Though I guess Rolex did that with the fun colored OPs, so it's not that strange.

Fluted bezels in general (especially with jubilee bracelets) are also more popular on DJ's, I do agree.

Fluted dial + fluted bezel + jubilee is too busy for me, so that's also a little surprising that it's apparent the most sought-after combo according to the video.

Anyway - sorry, poor grammar hah

No worries. My mistake, in interpreting what you said. I’m surprised that they are being discontinued, as well, though I totally agree, with you, that fluted dial with fluted bezel, on Jubilee is a bit much. Apparently, we are in the minority, except maybe Rolex agrees with us, and has something new in mind. W and W should be interesting.

I went into an AD looking for info on a professional model I might be interested in. When he saw my bimetal Wimbledon he asked how long I was waiting for it. Apparently he had a long waiting list and didn't get many during a typical year. Does make one feel good

It does, and the dial stands out, so much better, in the two tone configuration, IMO. I haven’t been able to take mine off, since Saturday. Cheers!

Actually most DJ are below retail. Exception blue, green, and Wimbledon. You cannot sell at those premiums to a grey dealer.

I’d faced the same question from different AD’s I visited around the world. They told me not many times have received Wimbledon dials

yes, these prices are at the retailer, not private sale

Grey market I don't have much knowledge of, but from what I have heard, it is whatever the grey marketer can get away with, which is highly dependent on the client, the time and his need to sell.

As my late grandfather used to say, a share has no value until you have sold it!

DJs are easy to buy, my friend bought a level A, 41 fluted jubilee blue dial, as a walk in to build for a Batman. He offered it to me for cost, after a grey offer, and I turned it down.

They are fairly easy to get, but generally unpopular or unplanned combinations. There are so many DJ combinations, that for single jewelers, they are very unlikely to have most combinations on the waiting list. Rolex distributes colourways in only ways they know. i.e. the jeweler doesn't know what they are going to get.

If you go to an AD with a specific DJ to buy, you have to wait for sometime, especially if it is a requested colourway. They trickle into individual jeweler shops slowly.

Basically, my trusted AD, who I would absolutely trust to work to get me what I wanted, said that he can source Rolex's fairly quickly if you have an open mind, i.e. not fixed on the colourway. I was quite surprised when he told me a few professional models that he could also get fairly quickly (this means he already has it in his safe, know it is just coming in, or get source from another branch).

I have seen this video before. Bear in mind, it is from a gray dealer.

Their videos have a large reach and i feel they, as well as others, are massively responsible for creating the buzz around certain dials.

These guys have such a limited knowledge of the watches beyond the gray market prices. They are what we call in the UK "wideboys". Glorified market traders.

I would love to ask them the difference between the 3135 and 3235 movements.

At one point, you could order a specific DJ configuration, by putting down a deposit, or even prepaying in full, but certain ones were excluded from that opportunity. However, Rolex has put the brakes on that policy, for now, according to my AD.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with what you posted. And I’m not saying that Watch Trader are crooks - I’m not sure what the story turned out to be.

But they are for sure a grey dealer. Just like the other popular UK youtuber, “The Honest Watch Trader”.

I hope in the near future these guys just go back to selling used watches as Rolex availability increases.
